Week 43 - ITF W60 - Glasgow, Great Britain Hard

Thanks for the detailed explanation Matt, and good luck to Mimi for this week and the rest of the season. If its ok to ask, will Mimi focus on ITF play for the rest of 2023 or does she plan to play the big US junior events and push for a junior top 10 season end?

Yeah, thanks for the explanation. I've always had that view in mind in discussions around WCs for other juniors with WC limitations but it never crossed my mind for Mimi here.

Really good to see you back, Matt

Do hope that life has been treating you well.

And, like the others, many thanks for the post.

My takeaway was simply: I'm glad someone sounds like they've really read the rules and understand them properly - I'm not convinced it's the case for everyone ! (not talking exclusively about GB here)

Best of luck

Just re the wildcards, I see that Mimi's birthday was just a couple of weeks ago.

Now, wildcards apply to birth year, I believe, not calendar year.

So, yep, it makes sense (never in question, he's the man ) that Matt is very concerned about not using them up

Whereas Mika's camp, presumably, don't have that issue - they know she'll start again as of her birthday (in 6 weeks time) so the calculations are easy.

Hopefully can clear a few things up- it's a bit of a minefield when it comes to WCs and events as Mimi only has 12 tournaments and 4 WCs to use up for the next 12 months until she hits 17 years old. However, if a player doesn't pick up a WTA point for an event then it wouldn't count as a WC or event played so you need to be quite tactical. All while juggling two calendars and sets of rankings with Juniors and Seniors.

We requested a Qualifying WC for the event as she would at least have won one match in order to get points and therefore use up an event and WC (was always going to play a seed first round Qs so likely to be a good win). Whereas you could take the MD WC and lose comfortably and get 1 point for the experience and it be a little of a waste of a WC and event. In the end she ended up sneaking into Qualifying on ranking which is great for the WC count for later down the line HOWEVER meant that she couldn't take a WC into the doubles as that would have still counted as one of her WCs. She is entered with a girl ranked about 450 in doubles and fingers crossed they get in as alternates but unlikely as Mimi unranked so I think 3rd ALTs at the moment.

Hope that's cleared it up somewhat

Really helpful. there can be a lot of criticism on here about who gets a WC (or more often who doesn't!!) and usually there's a one sided assumption that TPTB are solely responsible.

TPTB? What is that - sounds interesting though!

Can someone please explain why Appleton/Murray needed a wildcard whilst Dunne/McDonald didn't?

I'm useless at this sort of thing, telstar, but maybe they didn't enter on time?

Because on site entries are accepted on best of singles and doubles ranking, and Katy & Ella's CR with Katy's singles ranking is better than Emily & Sam's CR

OK, Lamdba, now I'm drawn in and doubtless as useless as always, but....

Emily App - doubles WTA 139

Sam Murray - doubles WTA 618

Ella McD - doubles WTA 536

Katy Dunne - singles WTA 346

Emily and Sam are better ranked, no?

It's last week's rankings that are used.

Sam 773 + Emily 140 CR 913
Katy 343 (singles) + Ella 522 CR 865

It can be confusing CD. Different weeks rankings are used for singles entry and doubles entry, and yet another for seedings. It's taken me most of this year to get my head around it even though I do the doubles draws every week - and I still get it wrong a lot of the time !
