RE: Week 43 - ITF W60 - Glasgow, Great Britain Hard

OK, so if the Billie Jean Juniors Cup is in two weeks time, does it seem a bit weird that none of the three-member team are playing doubles together?

Hannah is with Isa (some might say, why is she playing doubles in the first place? After all the exploits and effort last week)

Mimi is not playing at all

And Hep is playing with Mika who, unless things have changed, is not in the team at all

I wonder if Mimi's new coach has a different view on doubles, where you know she is so strong she is likely to go relatively deep in the draw? Focussing on the singles seems to be a different tactic and it will be interesting to see how this pans out.

I think it is nothing short of a disgrace that Eliz and Nell Miller have not got a place in this draw! Both are established doubles players ranked in the 500's. Nell is recently back from US uni where she will have learned a great deal about dubs play. Places have been given instead to two pairs of juniors who do not play doubles and who, in all likelihood, are not bothered whether they are in the draw at all!

Not sure why they gave Anna a WC she was higher than the top seeds in the Q draw and should have got in without the WC.

 So Maia's not in singles....

(Mimi qualified, she's not a WC)

And, yes, strange about Anna .....

And my hope for Kat proved ill-founded - which means (presumably) that she must be injured or esle she surely would have made the trip and played qualis (which had empty slots) and would have had a good chance of a third counter.

Was there not something in the last couple of weeks saying Maia had retired because of her wrist injury?

Oops, misread it. I was distracted by the cluster of players vying to take on Gadecki !

Just because Anna was above the top seed does not mean she would made it directly into the main draw. Now we can see she has a WC we know for sure she would have been the top seed in qualifying without one.

As I explained yesterday, Anna was not a direct entry to the main draw if Marni had taken her SE. Anna required a WC or for a WC to go unused to be in the main draw.

I expect Katherine Barnes and a few others did not travel because of the weather and/or the very lengthy delays and cancellations on the trains.

I missed the mention of wrist injury

But I guess it makes sense that she's only doing doubles then, it must be far higher on her priority list now (and rightly so, IMO).

Bit of a shame that Isa Lacy and Mimi are drawn together.

Mika definitely has a playable match though - the Swedish woman hasn't looked majorly impressive to date

I hope that Mika has a WC and Mimi went through qualifying was a decision by Mimi's team not to take WC, otherwise l find it a strange choice. This is Mika's 6th WC this year and she's only had 1 win (against Emma Wilson) from the previous 5. I don't see the justification of giving Mika a WC in a 60k when she's not succeeded in getting wins in 25ks. Mimi has only had WCs to Wimbledon qualifying and Ilkley qualifying. She's not had any WCs to British 25ks, partly because of injury earlier in the year. She's also of course, our junior #1. If we're giving WCs to juniors surely Mimi deserves a chance when Mika's had more than her fair share this year?

Back in the game...

Hopefully can clear a few things up- it's a bit of a minefield when it comes to WCs and events as Mimi only has 12 tournaments and 4 WCs to use up for the next 12 months until she hits 17 years old. However, if a player doesn't pick up a WTA point for an event then it wouldn't count as a WC or event played so you need to be quite tactical. All while juggling two calendars and sets of rankings with Juniors and Seniors.

We requested a Qualifying WC for the event as she would at least have won one match in order to get points and therefore use up an event and WC (was always going to play a seed first round Qs so likely to be a good win). Whereas you could take the MD WC and lose comfortably and get 1 point for the experience and it be a little of a waste of a WC and event. In the end she ended up sneaking into Qualifying on ranking which is great for the WC count for later down the line HOWEVER meant that she couldn't take a WC into the doubles as that would have still counted as one of her WCs. She is entered with a girl ranked about 450 in doubles and fingers crossed they get in as alternates but unlikely as Mimi unranked so I think 3rd ALTs at the moment.

Hope that's cleared it up somewhat
