Excellent effort from Katie against the world number one. Even if she wasn't at her best, these players have the ability to pull things out of the bag even when they're not on top form. Also, as we know, Katie hasn't been able to play against top opposition for well documented reasons for most of her career and it can take time to step up to that level. She's doing really well at the moment and is clearly proving that she easily deserves to be a top 100 player and probably a top fifty player.
from what I can tell, the WTA Race has 5 qualified, 3 places open and Live Tennis suggests 6 players are fighting over those 3 slots:
6th Vondrousova - 3671 points
7th Jabeur - 3660
8th Muchova - 3650
9th Sakkari - 3040 plus up to 990 points more from Beijing = 4030 max
13th Ostapenko - 2520 plus up to 880 points more from Beijing = 3400 max
15th Kudermatova - 2460 plus up to 880 points more from Beijing = 3340 max
The last 2 cant go top 8 this week so that suggests (and I dont follow closely) that the tournies next week will also count and this isnt the end of the process? What events are taking place next week and are all these big guns entered? Presumably they are 250 points events and the three outside the top 8 will need to have a deeper run this week to stay in contention?
Seoul and Hong Kong are 250's, Zhengzhou is a 500. The following week there are Monastir, Jiangxi, and Cluj - all 250's. Sakkari can't play any more 250's as she has reached her maximum as a top 10 player. Ostapenko, Kasatkina and Kedermetova need to win Beijing or they are out of contention.

thanks TA - and Kasatkina went out in the last 32 in Beijing, today, I believe so she is out of contention now.
So, presumably Sakkari is entered into Zhengzhou (eta, it seems she is), and no doubt the others as well to maximise their points? Shame we cant see entry lists anymore for the WTA

Kudermatova also out of the running now. Just two, Sakkari and Ostapenko, chasing the 3 incumbents now
There is WTA Zhenghou 500 next week plus two WTA 250s and 3 WTA 250s in the week beginning 16/10.
The WTA site suggests all these would count as the qualifiers ate determined at the end of the regular season.
Yeah, indeed, but unless the chasers can get within 500 points or 250 (depending on which event they play) its futile. Ostapenko needs to title this week and again next week to make it. Sakkari is in a better position, but even a ru spot this week would leave her 200 plus points behind.

The WTA news article that I posted sets out who needs to do what in which tournament.
Sakkari lost today and I think her chances are ended from the above although she will obviously be in the B level Elite Finals - what a complete waste of time that event is!!!
