Rugby Union World Cup 2023

Well, it was a pretty amazing weekend of rugby

SO SO close in all the scores......

I watched the French match on a big screen in a village square - 200 people in the square and I happened to be sat right next to the only little group of South Africans ever to have set foot in this part of France

The 4 of them were wonderfully vocal - and it actually was quite contagious - so, while the mood overall was deep gloom, I could feel the little bubble of utter joy that was the Afrikaans-speaking, beer-drinking South African rugby fans - who actually were also true gentlemen and applauded all the French tries (I can't say it applied the other way round.....)

England's match was awful in comparison to all the others - but, I guess, they got the win - which is more than favourties such as Ireland and Wales managed (New Zealand were spectacular)

England have been poor all tournament and , more widely, for a long time now. We have made the last 4 through a fortunate draw, nothing more than that. But I guess we need to be in it to win it, so let's see. FWIW, I cant see us beating South Africa at all now.

We are, of course, the only unbeaten team left in the event, so assuming we do go out next match, it will be a team winning it that has lost earlier in the tournament.

I agree that England have been, and are, pretty poor

But I don't think Wales could have got an easier quarter-final than Argentina, and they blew it

So it's not just the draw, IMO - England did well to rise to the occasion when they needed to, in a way that Wales didn't.

That is fair comment and Wales will be v disappointed. Nonetheless, I think we will get hammered by South Africa. Which is a shame, as my main current client is South African and they will lord it, for sure!

 Oh, yes, I agree biggrin

Based on those QFs, England will get blasted off the park.....smile no

But I always just want the best team to win - if it's all equal, then I'll go for England but it makes me raging mad when the team who deserves to win gets beaten

And I quite liked my South African spectating neighbours - so I've warmed to them a little biggrin

Sadly with work, some personal stuff and travelling on business , Ive not been able to get into this World Cup; for whatever reason, it hasnt gripped me. But sad England lost tonight on what looked like their best display.

All Blacks v Springboks final - whod have thunk it!

The one day cricket World Cup has also not caught my attention beyond checking the results. Seems England arent going to be bothering the latter stages of that event though !

I didnt get too watch the match - we are engrossed in a Netflix series called Dead to Me ( so gooood!) and socially distanced watching from different sofas and wearing masks windows open for airflow and 12 feet apart to try and avoid my wife catching my Covid lurgy.

Again discipline dominates and ruins another rugby union match in what was another poor match to watch...

I felt South Africa were lucky not to concede another penalty right at the death. Looked to me like Faf de Klerk delayed putting the ball into that final scrum to waste time.

This World Cup never did it for me, for lots of reasons , but ultimately it never caught my imagination.

Yes, but that's what it was all about, wasn't it? Penalties, yellow cards, red cards - yes or no - as paulisi says, it was a World Cup final of discipline (and umpiring), rather than entertaining rugby

Mind you, for South Africa to win their last three matches, all knock out criticial matches, all by ONE point, demands respect

By the way, who was the attractive woman Djokovic was with at the Rugby World Cup last night?

ITV cameramen swung onto the two of them, the commentators got all excited that Djoko was there, and suddenly they switched away at mega speed, obviously thinking they'd interrupted something they shouldn't have.....

ADD: Just gone an googled it - seemingly it was Rita Ora biggrin
