Week 38 - WTA250 - Guangzhou, China Hard

Jodie almost had a melt-down when serving for the first set at *6-5 when she was foot-faulted. She lost the game, but played a good tie-break.

Has had a melt-down since though. 4-0 down playing brainless tennis.

Super melt-down now, big argument with the umpire

*1-3 in the third

Disgraceful performance from Jodie. She would rather devote her energy to debating every single decision, getting into regular arguments with the umpire, than focus on the tennis match.

Why does she think she's the umpire ? It's not her job.

Yeah her brain was totally frazzled. Very frustrating. But she did demonstrate she's got the goods at this level once again which is something I suppose. Linette was playing pretty tidily by the end.

Not 5th seed but 5q seed presumably, carried over from qualifying matches.

Great to see Harriet keep going. Very surprised Minnen is ranked that high.

Minnen has been having successful time of late. She was Runner up in the 125K$ tournament in Kozerki Poland in August and followed this with qualifying for the US Open and reached the third round,

She seems a bright and pleasant girl off-court, don't know why she completely loses it sometimes when it only hurts herself.

 Well put

This is obviously her. It's ridiculous.

But, as I've said before, I think it's exacerbated by really poor coaching when she was younger

I've seen at least two matches, about age 18, where Colin Beecher and Lucie Ahl basically allowed Jodie to act like a complete prima donna, with hissy fits of utter Oscar winning level, and did nothing about it.

As coaches you have power. It doesn't matter if you're on the sidelines. I've seen coaches order their young players to shake hands and end the match, or else they're out. And that's just the ultimate threat.

Of course, JTC might say, but she's done really well. And I'd still say (a) yes, but she'd have done better, faster, if you'd had better discipline, and (b) what about the others whom you also allowed to behave the same way? (And there were several). Where are they?

And what about her Parents!! I don't think it is fair to blame what are essentially staff for failing to deal with her behaviour, that should be a parental responsibility.
If a child of mine behaved like that I would deal with it, not abdicate responsibility to some other poor bugger, at the very least, I would have a conversation with the coach and agree a clear plan to deal with it.
Unfortunately I've had a run in with a tennis coaching parent who not only failed to deal with his child's poor behaviour, but actively encouraged it.

I agree !

And, believe me, I dragged one of mine one off the court when his theatricals went over the top, IMO. Little scally was actually getting the other mother to feel sorry for him ! Best thing I ever did

But Jodie's parents weren't at the matches that I saw. And her coaches were.

And she was about 18. Not really a child.

So, I don't care if her parents were utterly delinquent in their parenting - all I do know is that the coaches should have intervened.

OK Jodie is a bit more fiery than most- but I think that is just the way she is. If she curbed it, maybe she would have done better; alternatively, like a certain JM, she may have done worse. It's tough out there and she is getting used to this level - let her be. Anyway good to see Harriet won her first match, she's had a tough time recently. I hope she has a good run.
