Interesting that Lily's final qualifying opponent, Hruncakova, got in as a lucky loser and a set up on Wang Xiyu.

Oh well done Lily! I love to see players taking their chances. She and Jodie are training partners I believe.

Well done again, Lily.

It just goes to show in tennis, you never know what's 'round the corner.

Set all now. That was a very good win by Lily at the time and of course has proved really huge given the MD R1 she came out with - a match that still had to be won of course and credit to her but in hindsight the real biggie was probably vs Hruncakova - a harder test than her MD.

Remember Lily's qualification campaign ( but not her MD match ) counts towards August PoM. Not voted yet? You have until Tuesday 9 am.

To think at the start of the month she couldn't get past R2 of a W25 in Foxhills...

Like Katie at Nottingham when a chance finally came her way she grabbed it with both hands.

No pressure on Lily in the next round but IIRC the last time Bencic played a British qualifier at Flushing Meadows she came off second best!

I didn't realise that Lily also used to live in Switzerland - and she played Bencic as a kiddie

"Miyazaki joked that she had watched 15th seed Bencic far more than the Swiss would have watched her.

She added: Yeah, Im really looking forward to it. Shes a great player obviously.

Its actually funny, when I lived in Switzerland, I played her when I was about nine years old and she must have been about seven or eight.

I remember even back then she was taking the ball so early. Half volleying, drive volleying, everything. Yeah, I expect a really tough match.

Cracking win and taking advantage.

Big ranking jump and a big payday too.

Probably mentioned above but apparently Lily and Jodie share a coach, Craig Veal.

Superb point from Katie to break that also showcased Parry's defensive skills that drove us all up the wall when she beat Harriet at Wimbledon.

*4-3

That was a brilliantly executed game by Katie let's hope she can keep that level going for a first ever US Open main draw win.

She got out of jail rather well there --- saved several break points
