Good to see Keys get through and she thrashed Pegula.

Someone talked about a womens top 4 or some such , breaking away from the others - Swiatek, Rybakina, pegula , sabalenka.

Not really proving correct, whoever said that !

There is a bit of a gap below them, but Gauff and Vondrousova are closing that gap. After that - nobody standing out right now.

Maybe on points but I am sure someone commented on those 4 forming a dnominating rivalry and I just done see the rivalries forming.

id love Gauff to move to the top , shed be a great leader of the womens game.

AH, that's different to your original post.  biggrin  I think those 6 will have the rivalries, but maybe not dominating just yet - wait for next season for them all to develop. Sabalenka at No 1, Swiatek with points to defnd, Gauff on the rise to No 1. I'm not convinced that Pegula and Rybakina will be fully in the mix but will challengs for certain tournaments.

Just be great to have sone consistent top players and rivalries with others trying to get in. A real narrative.

So often in recent years folk have talked about a possible top 4, 6 etc and it really hasn't come to pass.

I was just about to add this specific point, totally.

This. As the kids say.

Maybe it's just me but I don't feel the lack of rivalries in the women's tennis

I don't feel the lack in the men's either, which has the same problem - Carlos is too young to have any estaliblished rivalries and Djoko is too old - all his established rivals have basically quit.

I can't help it, I sometimes lose interest if you've got one Czech -ova playing another Czech -ova. I don't really like players from the same country playing, whatever. But if Madison wants to pop up and have a tilt at the title, and Ostapenko decides to do the same, and Cirstea has a purple late-flowering patch, and Muchova puts her dubs game on the singles court SO effectively, while young Coco has suddenly learnt the confidence to actually hit through her forehand, then I'm A1 happy.....

Not just you CD. I agree.

I can't think of anything more dull than watching the same players contest the business end of tournaments week in week out.

Just been far too much the other way for me in recent years, including ( indeed probably especially ) the Slams. Who's going to randomly appear in the later stages this time? I really would much prefer more regular repeat appeances and repeat big matches.

But hey, each to their own

For me it's ultimately about meaningful matches in terms of caring about who wins. This can be in the form of big rivalries (eg the old ATP big 3/4) or contrasting styles or interesting characters.

I have to be honest that if Sabalenka and Rybakina ended up at No. 1 and No. 2 and contested regular finals, I wouldn't be that invested in their matches. But if Swiatek, Gauff and Jabeur played each other on a regular basis, I would be up for that. And there are certain players like Ostapenko who are worth watching whoever they play.

Think there are plenty of appealing players left in the women's event, but I wouldn't want to see a final between Muchova and Vondrousova as much as I like them both individually.I

Yes, I think that's quite a good way of looking at it.

For the good of the WTA tour going forward, whether by personalities at the top or rivalries or whatever, plenty people need to actually care about what's going on.

I must say I'm finding it really hard to care about this tournament. Emma sort of spoilt us two years ago and now anything less than a British winner is disappointing (not that it seems likely to happen again anytime soon).
