Katie really didnt play the big points well, but her opponent really deserved that. She had no nerves and that forehand is huge! Great tournament for Katie, I just hope she can get some top 100 wins soon
I think nerves might have come into it and also shes had a number of big matches in a relatively short space of time and it probably takes a while to build up a tolerance to that, so you can more consistently bring your best game. She was also playing against a very partisan crowd. Still shes done well to get into the third round and will have benefitted from it.
I suspect Peyton Stearns has the higher ceiling. Has risen very quickly up the ranks since turning pro and her forehand is a huge weapon. But a tremendous few months for Katie - was ranked No. 126 on 11 June, so to be around 50 is quite the achievement. Needs to pick her tournaments carefully now to try and consolidate her ranking.
So I'm assuming that Katie now cannot be surpassed for No. 50? Only Tokyo and Bari going on this week (aside from US Open, where all other rivals have fallen too) with any near-meaningful points and no competitors would get anywhere near even if they won either event.
If I've got that right, a huge milestone and achievement for her.
I'm not surprised. You never know which Jelena is going to turn up on court, but if it's the big-hitting Jelena then I think she is unbeatable. Not bad for the women's draw though, opened up for her next clash with Coco - that should be a good one! My money is on Coco!
