And don't you hate it when our player loses and then their opponent retires in the next match?
Wickmayer only lasted four games....
You'll hate this even more. Wickmayer has a LL spot and plays a qualifier - Zvonareva
Im slightly amazed that someone who withdraws in qualies can still get an LL spot into the main draw! Wow. Seems open to massive abuse..:
Rather strange. Though not sure about any5 massive abuse given the draw for LLs.
Ok, hadnt realised they have a draw - sorry dont tend to follow rules too closely - and assumed it was next highest ranked got in. Which it used to be once upon a time? And then was probably open to abuse?
nonetheless. Not sure a person retiring in what is officially the same event should be able to return and play again?
I think there is a draw between the top 4 highest ranked players who lost in the final round of qualifying .Wickmayer and Birrell were the lucky 2. Hruncakova who Lily beat and Yastremska lost out in the lucky losers draw. Wickmayer semi finalist in the 2009 US Open plays Zvonereva who was the US Open runner up in 2010. And they are both mothers as is Lily's opponent.

You're right - I do
Me too. Ridiculous rule that you can be a LL after retiring in your previous match.
It's to be hoped that LL Wickmayer completes her match against Zvonareva. Apart from withdrawing in her final qualifying match here after 4 games in her previous tournament in Prague in early August she also withdrew with back trouble after 4 games.

I'm sure the first round prize money of $81.5k didn't have any influence on whether to sign in. After all, she'd already got $45k for losing in the FQR.
Such an excellent performance from Lily so far - unexpected given her general form this year, but her game matches up very decently at this level. Brilliant.
Don't really begrudge Wickmayer her place either - she is ranked 67 at the moment so it's just the rankings lag that had made her go through qualifying anyway. Hopefully she'll make the draw.
Wickmayer beat Zvonareva 6-4 6-4, so nothing seriously wrong with her.
At least Wickmayer had fully recovered. Maybe she did not want to risk further injury in qualifying. Because the cut-off for the Grand Slams is some weeks before the actual event it means that some players are in qualifying who would now be in the main draw and vice versa. Wickmayer being a case in point. Hibino who lost in the 1st round of qualifying is another case in point. Betova got into the main draw because of a protected ranking but had not won a match since March 2021. However that has helped Lily's career if nothing else.
