week 33 - WTA125 - Stanford, USA Hard

Well beaten 6-2 6-4. Doesn't feel like much of a surprise though really.

No sadly not much of a surprise. Have an ominous feeling for Heather, I cant see her plodding away in challengers much longer. If she doesnt get back top 100 by year end I wouldnt be surprised to see her move on in life.

I'm not convinced about this as I'm not sure what she would move on to.   I believe she'll want to carry on playing for a while yet.  I've felt for some time that she should try and find a regular partner and start playing on the doubles tour.  That way she could probably still play the odd singles match in qualies too.

I dont see her playing on the doubles tour. Its just not the same and despite Heather being capable of doing really well there I think she will feel the same.

Jodie 4-2*

Had 4 break points and two game points in the two games she's lost.

It's interesting. Before the start of the grass court season, Heather was looking at a potential drop down the rankings, before her great performance in Nottingham. And then she picked up some points in Poland. Without these she would be outside the top 200. She just doesn't have the consistency these days to mount a challenge back towards the Top 100.

I don't see Heather as a doubles specialist after so many years of good singles. Am struggling to think of any other player who has done a similar switch at this stage of their career.

Yes, a great win - and a chance of a run now.

If Jodie had taken a few more of her break points the scoreline would have been even more one sided. Jodie finished with something like 5/15 break points to her opponents 2/3.

She seemed pretty happy winning in Warsaw, it might be the only way to stay on the WTA Tour if her singles form continues to decline.

Heather had 111 points coming off June-August and has already scored 243. Most players would be happy with a decline like that. Also very few off this year after August so effectively a "free hit".

Well done Jodie!

And personally I could see Hev doing a bit of coaching, commentary and TV punditry, if that was what she wanted to do. Think I'd far rather have her presenting Wimbledon than Balding. At least she'd know what she was talking about.
