Vera Zvonereva got to Warsaw airport - and then wasn't allowed in for visa issues due for security reasons, due to 'support of Putin'/membership of military sports club

(Potapova - who wore the Spartak Moscow football shirt on court - has also not been given a visa to Hamburg and has had to withdraw)

Will the wta stay quiet or complain?

Nonetheless, good. Happy they are playing hardball at visa level.

Not true. Zvonereva was blocked from entering the country because she arrived from Serbia. Poland along with the Baltic states have had a policy from September last year that they will not allow entry to Russians and Belarusians arriving into Poland from outside the Schengen area for tourism, culture, sport and business purposes.

Well, perhaps but that's now quite how the Minister put it across.

The Ministry issued a statement which, from the Polish news, included (under various translations):

"The Russian woman is on the list of persons whose stay is undesirable in the territory of the Republic of Poland, she was not admitted by the Border Guard due to state security and protection of the public," the ministry added.

or

"Polands interior ministry said that Zvonareva is on a list of people considered undesirable in the country."

If she's on a list, she's on a list, no matter which airport she came from.

If the 'list' bit is a mistranslation, then fine.

Im amazed / incredulous when I read twitter in regards matters like these how many people support the Russian players who are supposedly discriminated against - British and US aggression in places like Iraq, Libya are often cited , why didnt Brits and Americans get banned back in the day - and a general feeling of players should just be allowed to get on with it.

I wonder if that attitude is the dominant one in Europe in places like France or southern Europe? People like Bob or CD , with your Spanish and French links, what is your sense ?

Normally Afghanistan is cited in such ridiculous comparisons. Can we hope that it has been dropped because you have some sympathy for women under the Taliban?

My take from reading various Polish sites (admittedly via my browsers translate function) is that the list part is a generic list on which is Russian sportspersons rather than a list of individual names. A few mention surprise that she tried to circumvent Poland's ban on Russian sportspeople entering the country. Zvonareva has previously expressed opposition to the war.

Yes, could well be a generic list. But that would be a very long list if it had every Russian and Belorussian sportsperson (and other). But maybe. And no mention of relevance of other airport?

And there is mention that it is linked to the fact that Zvonereva is still a member of the CSKA Moscow sports club (the military one). So they might have a generic list of all those members. (Or she might not be any longer, and it's wrong - certain Russian sportspeople have tried to distance themselves from it, such as Kudermetova)
