Anyway onwards. If the Swiss beat Oz tomorrow we are through..

Somehow I dont think thats very likely. Nothing to play for. Lets hope Smiths decision to play Norrie today doesnt prove costly.

Looking at it differently you can assume Australia win 3-0 and the loser of Britain and France misses out .

I would imagine Evans will play Mannarino ( 4-1 H2H ) and Draper v Humbert . Jack has never played Humbert but the match up could favour him.

Andy is 3-0 v Mannarino but 2 of those wins were in 2015 and the Frenchman is playing his best tennis this year. Andy is also 2-0 v Humbert. Norrie is 3-1 over Mannarino and 1-1 v Humbert

If it comes down to doubles GB should edge it.

Tongue in cheek really, I do agree, the Swiss will likely play the younger players having now missed out, so Oz could take all three rubbers but it's not a given.

It must be Draper and Evans now for the singles? I concur and hope that it is enough to win the match before Evans has to go out again for the dubs. We could see today the difference a fresh Evans makes in the dubs compared with the leggy version in the Oz fixture.

If Dan and Jack play, and they should, then Dan will be #1 and Jack at 2 due to rankings. So Jack would play Mannarino and Dan versus Humbert. Dan would need to play number 2 to play Mannarino.

Although France have Fils in the sidelines, Humbert and Mannarino have played fine so and probably wouldnt be dropped youd think. So it would most likely be Draper v Mannarino and Evans v Humbert

I thought Mannarino was the highest ranked ? He is above Humbert in the live rankings

He is their highest ranked player now, but in the rankings of 28/08 Humbert was higher ranked. Humbert played Wawrinka, so is playing as No 1, so they must be using the previous rankings.

Yep- mannarino has been playing second singles all week, and done well with two wins over Stricker and Purcell.

I don't admire Andy for that. Should have gone to the funeral we have other players who could have stood up.

Andy was urged to play by his dad - from the guardian

Later, the 36-year-old said that he did not tell the captain, Leon Smith, about his bereavement but he had been urged by his father, William, to play: I spoke to my dad about it and he said: She would want you to play. He just said make sure you win, so I did.

I wonder if there would have been time after they knew the date of the funeral to replace Andy with Joe.

I also wonder why the family had the funeral then. These days there is no rush to have a funeral.

Line ups today are

Kokkinakis v Stricker - both come back into the team

De Minaur v Huesler - Stan over and out

Ebden and Purcell v Stricker and huesler

Got to fancy Australia, maybe 2-1, possibly 3-0?

Does 2-1 help us , anyone close to the maths and count backs on how that plays out if we lose to France?

In other action. Pakistan playing Indonesia on a grass court in Pakistan. Lovely - love that part of the Davis cup

If I have got this right, a 3-0 win for Australia will mean we have to beat France. As Wawrinka is not playing I think this is the most likely scenario.

If Australia win 2-1, and France beat GB 2-1 we will go through on head to head with Australia with France winning the group.

Im not exactly certain - we will all three teams have beaten each other 2-1, will that go to sets difference in a 3 way tie? Or will it be based on the Swiss results, in which case we would be worst off in that scenario and go out?

Someone will know exactly when the 3 way tie includes Swiss results as part of the count back. Feels to me like we have to win though !

Ok - rule 57.2.3.3 I think

www.daviscup.com/media/330432/330432.pdf

In a 3 way tie , it isnt head to head:

Firstly percentage of matches won, then sets and then games.

and then when a 3 way tie is broken, its head to head.

In this case if Australia win 2-1 and we lose to France 2-1, then France and Australia would be 6-3 (66 percent) and we would be 5-4 (55 percent) and we would be out. Australia would win the group as it would then be head to head result with France

If Australia won 2-1 and we lose 2-1 , we would both be 5-4 and we would take it on head to head versus Australia

 So as you say TA!

At the moment Kokkinakis is a set and a break up so looks like he will make it 1-0
