Jodie is down for the MD. Wonder if she will play?
Any reason she shouldnt ? She would be a high seed and a good chance to keep moving forward with her ranking and automatic entry to the us open
Only that our girls make a habit of entering these sorts of tournaments and then dropping out at the last minute (like Heather above). I agree this would be a good one for her as you say, but personally I'll be surprised (but delighted) if she turns up.
Whereas you get the likes of Liam Broady who is already in the US competing in his next tournament. Our ladies dont seem to put as much into it then some of our men it has to be said.
Honestly, how many times does a comment have to be repeated before it becomes a trope. I just looked this up. Liam has played 22 tournaments this calendar year: the same as Katie Boulter and Heather Watson, one fewer than Jodie (who had an injury that took her out for a while), and far fewer than Harriet, who's played 28! Katie Swan has played fewer at 18 but I think is a lot more injury prone so has to be manage her body carefully.
Andy has played 22, Cam 23 and the saintly Dan 26. I don't think this lazy women thing needs to be continually repeated it's beginning to become irritating.
Ah you mean in the last 12 months. Was wondering how Dan Evans could have fitted in 26 events in the first half of 2023!
But agreed, this lazy British women trope is becoming very tedious. Firstly untrue, and secondly not taking into account a need for all players to train and rest, and manage any injuries. Sadly a number of our elite women have had serious injuries, and a credit to them that they have managed to put behind them.
The one thing that would help the women would be playing tournaments at their level. Katie Boulter is a bit of a bully this year with only one victory over anyone in the top 100.
Raise your rankings by winning the ITF tournaments and play in the WTA ones when you automatically qualify. Don't lose a week messing round in qualifying for 6 rankings points when you could get 80 for a QF.
I know its a bit short termist in thinking and you only improve by playing people better than you, but it has to be a brutal career losing more matches than you win.
Isn't that just vulturing? The aforementioned Arantxa Rus seems the worst offender winning lots of matches at ITF and 125 level to stay in the top 100 and qualify for slams but struggles on the main tour.

Whatever many may think of it, if the WTA & ITF allow it ( rather than say limit the number of tournaments at certain levels well ranked players can enter ) then there is an argument for if you can't beat them join them.
I think Rus deserves credit for her work ethic and graft. She is about to likely take out her CH of 61 from 2012 when she was 21 at the age of 32 and she has made the second week of a Slam before so she meets my criteria for being a top 100 player more than Jodie or Katie at the moment to be honest.
You're right. I meant Ilkley (third time lucky). If he had have played Ilkley instead of Queens it would have counted.

I think Andy has a lifelong commercial commitment to play Queens, Im sure he signed something a few years ago, so is compelled to play there whilst he is still playing. I might be wrong.

I'm pretty sure you are correct Jon re: Andy's commitment to Queens. Fed had one with Halle.

There we go then! I'm not sure it would have made much difference to his Wimbledon prospects. He got beaten by Tsitsipas who got beaten by Eubanks, who was beaten by Medvedev, who was beaten by Alcaraz, so he probably wasn't in line for a major run.
Would have loved to have seen him play Eubanks.
Back to the women, it is an interesting moral quandary on the vulturing, but the reality is for most of our women, that the 250 competitions is probably their level at the moment.

A top 100 player is someone who has got enough points to reach the top 100, pure and simple. Katie Boulter with her 22 tournaments this calendar year deserves it every bit as much as Sara Tormo with her 15 tournaments or Magdelena Frech with her 35 tournaments. Katie we know hasn't been able to play as many tournaments as others because of her physical issues and Jodie has also missed out on key part of the year when she wasn't defending points and would have most likely been higher up than 98. But they both deserve their ranking. No one gets to the top 100 without an awful lot of work behind the scenes, particularly if they suffered lots of injuries. Katie has also reached the level before and I think she would have easily stayed there if she hadn't had so many injuries.
In reality, all our women have a balance of tournaments at higher level and ITF level. They may not always get it right in terms of choosing particular tournaments but I think they all work hard and deserve what they achieve.
Can I say that I am absolutely delighted that Jodie is playing here and has a chance to consolidate her top 100 ranking. It's just a pity Emilie has drawn her in the first round. And to clarify I absolutely was not calling our girls lazy - I just personally get disappointed when I'm looking forward to watching them (sometimes after a barren tennis period) and they all pull out at the last minute.
