Week 27/28 - Wimbledon Ladies, Great Britain Grass -DOUBLES

Thats an amazing win for them! Very pleased, could really make a stab of a career as a pair. Naiktha has had her biggest paycheck of her life this week including quailies Im sure!

In confirmation

R1:- Naiktha Bains (GBR) / Maia Lumsden (GBR) CR347 (171+176) [WC] def Anna Danilia (KAZ) / Yifan Xu (CHN) CR51 (24+27) [11] 3-6 7-6(7-3) 7-6 (11-9)

They really looked a good pair. Much much better than their showing at Surbiton just a few weeks ago.

It will be, but probably not by as much over her previous highest as you may think. She got about US$37,500 from the 2019 Australian Open (Q3 singles, R1 doubles)

I do get the rationale for pairing up with Jodie in order to basically guarantee you'd get the opportunity to play, but it's real shame Emily wasnt given the ability to compete here with her actual regular partner Lohoff.

Jodie and Emily App were pretty poor

It was one of those doubles where one person is always shouting 'yours' 'yours' and doing nothing (not the same one person, either, it was both of them - you'd think they were allergic to the ball at times)

But Jodie's had a good Wimbledon and still has mixed to come

PS Agree with PaulM - Emily App looked the shadow of herself on this court in this pairing

R1:- Emily Appleton (GBR) / Jodie Burrage (GBR) CR825 (130+495) [WC] LOST TO Yana Sizikova (***) / Kimberley Zimmermann (BEL) CR89 (42+47) 3-6 4-6

There's a reason Bains/Lumsden won and Appleton/Burrage lost. Teamwork and experience playing together. I understand the principle of not wanting to give wild cards to GB+international doubles pairings, but Appleton's ranking of No. 130 probably merited one. And one win could have lifted her towards the Top 100. Burrage isn't going to be playing much doubles going forward and has the mixed.

Superb for Naiktha & Maia, they are becoming quite a pair.

With their thumping 130 points for reaching R2, plus poor Emily losing and also dropping points from last year at this time, our GB 6, 7 and 8 ranked are now live ranked :

135. Naiktha
136. Emily App
137. Maia

Agree completely. How are 2 Brits losing worth more than 1 Brit + A.Nother player winning?

Because they probably think 2 Brits losing is worth more than 1 Brit + A.Nother losing.

Emily App and Julia, on paper, would lose.

Now, I agree, I'd be very happy to give them a chance.

But I can see the argument the other way, based on the rankings.....

Wild cards by definition are expected to lose on paper. And there are recent examples in both men's and women's doubles of wild cards being awarded to GB-foreign pairs: Moore/Perrin and Broady/Muhammad. I suspect in this instance the LTA didn't believe enough in this pairing despite their reaching the semifinals in Surbiton. And maybe they are wanting to encourage Brits to play together with an eye on future team competitions.

Yes, I realise wildcards are expected to lose

That's why they would prefer to give them to an all-GB pair

And nearly always do

And, yes, I can't see jodie and Emily challenging for a fed cup place.... cry

But they had a decent crowd, I don't think Emily has played any Wimbledon main draw before, the powers that be were more generous this year than some other awful ones where they left a large number unattributed, it's pretty decent all told

Now to see if our real confirmed regular and important partnerships  can manage a win tomorrow...

Yes CD, I had said that I didn't think Emily App & Jofie were a Fed Cup pair in waiting.

Then, unlikely as it may be, I thought Jodie could easily be in on her singles, Emily App could conceivably be for her doubles sometime in the future, and hey it could be at least an emergency pair down the line.

So I deleted. But possibly my first instinct was right

Heather and Harriet - second on Court 4, but not before 2pm
Lissey and Liv - second on Court 6

Freya and Ali not on the OOP today - presumably because Cornet's involvement in singles until yesterday.
