Week 27/28 - Wimbledon Ladies, Great Britain Grass

Very disappointed with that result, Swiatek v Vondrousova for a slam final is another flop moment for the WTA imo. The qfs looked strong with the top 4 ranked players, Ons at #6 there too. I was hoping for a strong showing for the top women!

So delighted for Elina! Could this actually be the Ukrainian fairytail? God I hope so!

looking ahead Vondrousova is now 2-0 in slam quarter finals and 1-0 in slam semi finals so she is a big time player. If Svitolina gets through and Sabalenka makes the final I think the atmosphere would be unbearable for Aryn. My money is still on Rybakina defending the title.

Great win. Lovely moment between the two at the end. Super of Elina to credit Iga with having been so supportive etc over the past year.

At the last point, I just had a vision of a lanky black French guy, leaping out of his chair, punching the air, and cavorting around the place. Do hope he's not actually baby-sitting

It's a great story.

But also, she played some excellent tennis.

Good wildcard, AELTC

Im not so sure Sabalenka will get past Madison TBH. I think Madison has the grasscourt game and the power to counter Sabalenka. Whatever should be another great match! Would love to see Elina get to the final though.

Vondrousova is not a household name by any stretch despite having some high moments in recent years, but she can play an entertaining type of tennis and I think it's an intriguing match-up. Can definitely see it being a big battle between the two.

Yes lets hope Madison has one of her self contained days

We are guaranteed a non seeded  player in the ladies singles final for the first time since 1963, 60 years ago. Billie Jean Moffitt (King) was the player in question where she lost to Margaret Smith(Court) in the final. There is yet to be an unseeded lady champion. It will only be the 5th time that  an unseeded player has reached the Wimbledon ladies final.

It's not baby sitting if it's your actual child...

Svitolina has been no.3 in the world. Just because she isn't right now, doesn't mean she isnt a top woman.

 Absolutely.

Even more than that, for year-end rankings, Svitolina was:

2017 - WTA 6

2018 - WTA 4

2019 - WTA 6

2020 - WTA 5

2021 - WTA 15

And then she got pregnant and had a baby !

So that's about as top as you can get

Svitolina's last 2 matches  in March 2022 before taking time off to have her baby were 1st round defeats to Harriet and Heather respectively. Jo's last singles win was against Svitolina and it was the only time she ever beat her.  Svitolina has been very active on her return and has played plenty of tournaments.

Very interesting, although of course we are talking 2 players here with pedigree. In particular, as her above  year-end rankings show, Svitolina would have been a high seed in previous years before her little career interruption.

Absolutely!  And Vondrousova has been a French Open finalist in the past and had to take a year out with injuries and I think had an operation on her arm(?).

I don't get the bashing of results like yesterday. The tennis in the Pegula v Vondrousova was stunning at times and the Svitolina story is a dream for the tournament and for the profile of women's tennis. Interestingly Svitolina is the only remaining woman in the draw not to have made it to a grand slam final. Considering what she is going through with the war in her country I hope she can get there but Vondrousova is a very tricky player.

This has happened before with players with pedigree coming back after a year out not being seeded and winning a Grand Slam. I am thinking of Kim Clijsters at the 2009 US Open and Sloane Stephens at the 2017 US Open. Elina Svitolina was saving her efforts for Wimbledon because her last match before Wimbledon was a 6-2 6-0 loss to Linda Fruhvirtova in the first round at Birmingham. Talking about unseeded finalists Mary Pierce won the Australian Open in 1995 but in 1997 with 16 seeds was unseeded. But she had the pedigree where she reached the final to lose to Martina Hingis.

Not to be but I will take Ons any day - will be rooting for her in the final. She would be a fab champion!
