Week 27/28 - Wimbledon Ladies, Great Britain Grass

Yes I'm afraid it looks like nerves overcame her, and Daria is not a player that gives freebies to help you settle in. Not a great match up at the best of times, but particularly bad when you're making your Centre Court debut.

Nerves maybe or perhaps a British trait of not realising that Kasatkina was a class above. We are talking about Top 10 level and the evidence thus far is Jodie is way off this. Shes making progress sure but it wasnt really a contest.

I hope Jodie doesnt make any excuses about the wee moan she had prior to the rain delay when broken back at 2-1 up. Shes making progress needs a good run at the upcoming hard 100ks now to cement the top 100 spot and be ready for US Open and playing on this stage more regularly.

Yes. A bit of both.

After all, if Jodie didn't give away lots of loose points, she would be a lot higher ranked.

And I know she doesn't always give away so many but that's partly the opponent and partly just the normal variation - the first match at Surbiton, for instance, was nothing but errors.

She's had an exciting Wimbledon. Never won a match before. Never played on Centre Court. She can't become a completely different player overnight. Today was a bit disappointing but it was a good show overall. And still got doubles.

I remember the months and years so many people were convinced that JB would never have the mentality to reach the top 100. She's getting there, but yes quite right CD - never gonna happen overnight, but impressed with her progress.

And it's their job, their expertise

And then 40 mins later - it's raining !

Oh everyone knows not listen to the met office. The club needs to do some appropriate risk management - if we close the roofs well get 8 matches on them, if we dont well get no more than 6. It was a wash out yesterday what were they thinking? And we will have players safely in the 3rd round with others not even started their 1st round by Thursday. Its an absolute joke

And then what, at some point the roof becomes pointless because no one else has managed to play and players are waiting for their opponents to play their matches.  It's actually really unfair on the regular players that aren't on Centre Court

Kasatkina into the third round, meanwhile over 100 players still to play their first round matches.

Well done Wimbledon lol.

Yeah not a good day. Overwhelmed at the start, got herself going in the second but allowed herself to get sucked into pitty pay rallies with high topspin forehands instead of actually hitting the ball. Too many times did control the point but didn't put the ball away and Kasatkina was so good at working her way into the points and having Jodie running about on a string.

Broken three from game point up, missed 3 break points in one game. You can't miss any of those - totally different stopping for rain at 3-1* than 2-2*, and meant the Russian was never under pressure.

But a milestone and her team should be pouring over that match. So much to learn from what she didn't get right today.

The All England Club invested millions and millions on these roofs, erm use them. I dont see your point, so we should never use the roofs? How about better scheduling and organisation instead of of not using undeniably useful facilities

At the 2022 US Open Harriet beat Kasatkina in the 1st round. Kasatkina had won Granby the week before.

In years gone by in 1968 Wimbledon was very wet. With the rain delays Virginia Wade played her 1st round match very late on on the Thursday evening. She lost to the Swedish player Christiana Sandberg  who she  had beaten in the Fed Cup a few weeks  earlier. At the time she said the more the match went on the more  she was convinced she was going to lose

Dimitrov wins easily so Katie should be on court soon

One thing is apparent from the comms here, Sam Smith is much better than Jo Konta. Not too impressed with Jo got to say. Waffling away here.

No wonder Sam is better than Jo she's more experienced at the job. After last years Wimbledon Jo didn't do any commentating until Swiatek's match on Monday.

The point is that in the grand scheme of things, using the roofs and having even a few extra matches played, makes extremely little difference to what's outstanding on the schedule ( yet folk are arguing the toss about say getting one more match played on each court ). It really is no big deal and they are trying to do a difficult job and probably trying to apply a bit more logic than some folk.

Next week is more important when most of the later round big matches are due to be played on showcourts. And then the roofs can really help by allowing these to be played as scheduled.

You need to take into account the audience, the sponsors, the global tv audience - it makes an absolutely huge difference regardless of logistics
