She had it. Made such a good start and looked solid in the early stages of the tiebreak but just got understandably nervous and Zhao knew exactly what to do to make it all very difficult. Third set you sensed the belief had gone a little, but she dug in, got level, and then sort of froze again with some poor errors and lost the final 8 points.
That will really sting, but she's had a good few weeks and still her doubles to come where she's closing in on top 100.
Has the opportunity to get both rankings up on the summer hardcourts definitely.

Eden not doing what I'd hoped so far! 3-5*
Very unlucky Emily keep plugging away though. No need to reference the Doubles point doesnt really mean anything top 100 or 50 almost moot in context, its Wimbledon qualifying eyes on the prize. We must be the only country that make these points. Probably why we struggle to get top 100 players.
Ruse stepped it up to take the first set 7-5 but another good showing so far from Isa.
From what I saw of it, a very disappointing display from Eden. Really didn't get going at all against a beatable opponent (who played quite nicely in patches but was very much allowed to).

I don't want to be too harsh, as clearly Riera is rapidly ascending for a reason, but I think it's...discouraging...to lose 3 and 3 against someone who was playing their first ever professional match on grass.
And Jaggy, I'm sure the doubles means nothing to you, but I can guarantee playing her first Slam Main Draw, possibility of making top 100, and some nice prize money to reinvest into her (singles) career means rather a lot to Emily! Her Wimbledon qualifying is over, that prize is gone so no point having "eyes" on it anymore (I agree that the singles would and should have been her absolute focus last week for pre qualies and this week, and if she'd won today I wouldn't have mentioned it because well why would you). Dust down, learn, get back to work. There are still matches to be played and won at Wimbledon this year to set her up for a positive summer.
True. No point beating herself up over the singles. Look forward to hopefully more experience on the grass and more prize money in her pocket.

Beg to disagree. Many British players (Emily included) have minimal chance of making top 100 singles ( and thus reasonable earnings). Many (Emily included) have every chance of making top 50 doubles (and thus reasonable earnings).
My point is its almost as if its ok doubles is more important. Much more money making 1st round of Slams in singles than doubles unless you are top 10. Ive got Australian pals and they laugh at the British when they lose. Dont worry guys youve always got doubles. Like I say we are the only country with this mentality. But then they dont have the Tory middle class barrier to entry we have.
Talking of which how do we get rid of that Tory Brexit turd Castle off our screens. Why do the BBC persist with him listening to his drivel in qualifying now as well. Lloyd and Castle now ffs how many emails to the BBC of complaints will it take to get rid of these dinosaurs.
