On the serve though - it really amazes me how different serves can be. I was always taught to throw out front as CD says, not too high and be leaning into it, hitting it maybe near the top of my reach whilst pushing forward into the court . I serve volleyed when young so it gave me momentum to get to at least the box, and be able to volley the return.
But you see such a range of throws , some so high they never come down, some where there is just no bend or leg movement to provide the power, some shoulders only. Some arms only . A crazy range of styles
How come you've never seen her serve, Jon? You must have seen Harriet play on TV, surely, no?
I haven't, I really haven't!
As said before, and maybe this is very sad, I actually watch very little tennis at all.
My watching on grass this season
Surbiton - watched highlights shots packages on BBC most night, maybe a max of 7-10 mins a day
Nottingham - ditto and watched Andy Murray in the mens final and the womens Boulter v Burrage match with my lovely little dog at my side. Sadly she died the next day and I watched zero tennis at all from Queens or Birmingham or Ilkley apart from a few shots of Alcaraz in the final at the weekend, maybe 2 mins max, and I went to actually watch the Ilkley finals - non Brits of course!
And i havent seen in person tennis since 2019 before that.
This week - nothing, not a shot so far
Wimbledon - I will probably see the odd points here and there and maybe get into one or two matches - I would be lucky to see 5 mins per day most days, maybe 10, I cant conceive of watching the finals of either event
And those above are 90 percent mens, apart from Boulter v Burrage which captured my imagination. And I dont think I have seen any other British women play since Emma winning the US Open and maybe some stuff at Wimbledon last season
And that is more than any other period this year or in recent years. I would maybe fleetingly watch something on ITF live tennis, I dont watch any other events on TV apart from a) Tour Finals b) maybe something like Davis Cup if it is being shown.
Why - time is a big issue; not ad hoc time, I can find minutes here or there but a chunk of time, never, it doesnt happen and, being frank, it wouldnt capture my imagination. I read a lot of tennis stuff, I love reading about it, seeing the scores, keeping up with the players and forming opinions on them. And I love this board. But I just dont watch tennis hardly ever at all. And never Harriet, ever.
Is she any good? And most importantly, what is her second serve like??
