Week 26 - WTA500 - Eastbourne, Great Britain Grass

Katie played some great shots but as noted above there is a clear gulf in class. The Top 30 maybe 40 are way ahead of the best we can offer and dont see that changing for the foreseeable. Emma is another matter whether she will make it back there, odds against currently. Its going to take fortunate draws like the one Heather had last year for any to go deep at Wimbledon.

I don't think Katie did too much wrong. There was very little in it, but Petra got too many easy points on her first serve.

Jaggy, I think that is a very realistic summary. You hope that the British women can get enough ranking points so they can start to get higher-ranked opposition so they can improve. As for Emma. Her recent Instagram reel post for Vodaphone at an empty Wimbledon, not sure if it is a "goodbye look" or an "I want to back look"?  At the end of the day, Emma is most probably our best chance until the younger women and girls like Hannah and Mimi come into their own.

Marginally different era but when you talk about the gap out best girls still seem to be a distance from closing it is worth remembering how well Bally and Anne did to get top 50, Heather top 40 and Laura top 30. And of course Jo top 5.

Could Katie B get up that top 50 high? Maybe, needs a bit of luck, but still a lot of work to be done. But she has some good weapons, a decent upside but mostly needs to stay fit!

Always think Laura would have made it higher but for injuries, she had glimpses of competing with the top players whereas I think Heather did well like Elena and Ann in maxing out their ability. The Laura and Emma similarity shines through a lot when you consider the injuries. Obviously Laura didnt get the Slam but I always thought Emma was slightly fortunate in her Slam win and the stars aligned. If anything I thought she was looking better and had more improvement to come before those injuries to really push on and make several deep draws.

Yep and if Katie B faces stronger opposition like Martic more often on a week to week basis Im sure she will improve. Lacks the athleticism and defensive skills to become a mainstay in the top 50 but will continue to have good wins here and there

Martic has been around a long time  as I  remember Bally losing to her in the  first round of Wimbledon  2010 in a match she should have won.

Katie has got to find some variety in her game. She has weapons but when they're not firing she seems to have nothing else. More slice, coming forward, volleying etc might not have worked today but she imo need a plan B or just more variety on a surface like grass. She's played 1 doubles match in 5 years, so not getting much net play outside of training...

those are two tough matches next for Jodie and Harriet - dont expect too much change from those!

I wonder at what stage Ostapenko will pull out. Players who reached the later stages of tournaments last week seem mostly to have pulled out. Although there are a couple of champions from bygone years still there such as Keys and Plisova.

Apparently Ostapenko was looking very tired and grumpy today so you never know, if Harriet can frustrate her by getting lots of balls back she might implode?

Ostapenko is always tired and grumpy looking but I like her she has character and personality although maybe not everyones cup of tea. If she plays Im certain she will be too strong for Harriet and likewise Gauff in the other tie. Anything better than straight sets losses will be an achievement here.

I'm pretty much with you re Ostapenko. Whisper, I'm similar re Putintseva.
