Marni takes it 7-4 in the tiebreak - good win. Shame for Millie that she had to play such a strong opponent in the first round.

Yes.... that was the real killer draw.... I'm pleased for Marni that she didn't bottle it, though.

And if Marni goes on to the make the final, and qualify, I don't see there's any problem with Millie getting a wildcard - it doesn't have to be the two semifinalists

I think she should've got one because of her college record for the year and NCAA performance, but more difficult for LTA/AELTC to justify that retrospectively when she didn't get past R1 here.

Ciara takes the second set (which is a surprise to me at least) 6-3, and she and Jasmine will go the distance.

I have followed the play-offs for 20+ years and on no occasion has someone who lost in the first round been prioritised for a Wimbledon wildcard over a semifinalist.  The only possibility for Millie is a QWC for Eastbourne - there have been instances of early play-off losers being given those.

First time for everything

I thought winning Surbiton guaranteed a wildcard. But seemingly not. So I was just wondering if the rulebook is being torn up?

But, yes, I expect you're right - and Eastbourne makes more sense.

I just don't think they will want to give Ciara, say, a Wimbledon quali wildcard over and above Millie (if she happened to make the semis) ....

Good to see Marni continuing her good form - she played well as Surbiton.

I'm not really surprised by any of the other scores. Shame about Beth - she has lost her way over the last 18 months through illness and injury and, like her good friend Katy, must be in too minds whether to continue or not.

Anna vs Marni might be tight as well between two decent Q WC candidates, and at least a QF rather than L16 match.

But I agree that it is highly likely that any additional Q WC coming from here will go to a SF loser with the draw being seen as 'tough cookie'. It looks an unfortunate section to end up with.

Looking that it will most likely be a Naiktha vs Eden top half decider from the easier top half as I suspected.

Well done to Ciara - lovely result, although Jasmine continues to rather underwhelm in terms of her progression (NB Has Jamsine actually played any grass lead-up events?)

Indy, I'm not sure that Naiktha will find Katy all that easy but, then, I'm not Naiktha's greatest fan (in terms of tennis) so maybe I'm slightly biased.

Marni v Anna is certainly an interesting prospect - real shame there's no livestream but I guess we should be grateful for small mercies and at least there's livescores this year

I'm not sure the top half is that certain.  I fancy Katy to come through.

Who is Ciara? And why did she get a wildcard in the first place? I see her junior career high isn't even the top 1,000 - seems rather random, unless I've again, completely missed something?

She earned a play-off WC by winning the Premier British Tour event last week in West Worthing.

As posted by Lambda in the British Tour thread :

"Congratulations to 15 year old Ciara Moore and Giles Hussey who secure their places in the Wimbledon WC play-offs and get a main draw WC to a summer W25 and grass M25.

Giles Hussey [1, WC] def. William Jansen [2]. 6-4 6-0

Ciara Moore (15yo) def. Sophia Johnson [7]. 7-5 6-2"

Ciara is under LTA British tour

https://yorkshiretimes.co.uk/article/British-Tennis-Watch--Week-24

Always worth a read.

Mark is a contributer to this board - Ciara crops up in other episodes. Most of the stuff on the net is about an American college basketball player.

When was the last time someone from the WC Play-offs made it through to the MD?

Faint recollection of Dan Evans?
