Sonay seems to be rapidly improving on grass, hopefully she can make it through Wimbledon qualifying after failing to make the most of her MD WC last year.

Sonay is on record as saying she's been enjoying paying a lot more attention to fitness and conditioning. Which must help. And I always feel with her that confidence and 'presence' is a big thing. She was properly buzzing after Surbiton - saying something like 'And on grass!!! Haha, no one would believe it, on grass '. So, for me, she's not playing particularly better, but there does seem to be more of a belief that maybe she belongs here, and she doesn't have to be a Katie B/Emma Rad sort of player, say, that there's room for her too.

I really hope Sonay (or Charlie, or both) can make Saturday here - the field doesnt excite me too much otherwise compared to past years, so some GB interest would be very nice!

thanks Mark, good article and great photos!

How are the courts holding up? The one Isa Lacy is on looks quite worn and brown; the one the doubles picture is from looks lovely and green, quite lush. But they look in good knick generally, I would say?

Next few days forecast looks good now, hopefully a good run into the weekend.

Finally, re the womens - Sonay and her opponent are the only players into last 8 and they play today. The other 6 winners from Rd 2 will presumably be playing a second match later on today then?

Yes the OOP shows they are playing QF's later today.

Sonay come from 3-1 down to take first set 6-3. Surely Bolsova can't keep coming back?

After a slowish start, Sonay recovered a break and ended up taking the set fairly comfortably, playing patient and solid tennis. Much more solid than Bolsova at the moment, who is getting frustrated and hitting long more often than not.

[WC] Sonay Kartal GBR 6-3 *0-1 [5] Aliona Bolsova Zadoinov ESP

Very straightforward, impressive win in the end. Finishing off where the others couldn't!

Super !

I was expecting Aliona to maybe look a little tuckered out this morning, after yesterday, but nothing of it

Very nice match

Also, well done to the Ilkley crowd - it's the first time I've heard a crowd really shouting Sonay's name, getting more 'personal', if you know what I mean

I would think that was rather nice for her :)

Great job Sonay. Still in with an outside chance of getting that wildcard upgraded!

Make that her 6th    And WR 110 pips WR 113 as her highest rank win in the 3 weeks.

Does the winner of Ilkley get a WC? So if Navarro or Galfi win then it will be spare as both have direct entry?
