Kalinina's 3rd set performance almost made Jodie seem measly when it comes to gifting your opponent points with careless errors.
Well done Harriet. Super pass for the break in the 3rd set, came up with a few good serves and generally played pretty solid while I was watching.
Is it really that difficult to return a 2nd serve between 71 mph and 82 mph ? Jodie and now Kalinina have been hitting returns long, wide and into the net on a regular basis.
Despite the bad weather yesterday morning ended up seeing a really good day of tennis. Was going to post yesterday but after deciding to watch the Kostyuk v Potapova match instead of Dart and Burrage it was quite late by the time we got home.
Saw Barnet and Nichols to kick off with and I can only describe their performance as disappointing. After winning the first set quite comfortably they really fell apart. Really didn't seem to be much team work and generally completely lacking in dynamism. Really a flat performance by a pair who looked low on confidence. I wonder if they may have reached their ceiling as a pair though they can play a lot better.
Katie B's match was a bit of a mixed bag. Some great tennis interspersed with some bang average stuff too. The positive is that Katie looks fit and healthy. I didn't think she looked tired and seemed to be generally enjoying the match. However, her backhand needs to improve quite a lot if she want to stay safely embedded in the top 100. In all honesty Zhu was just a better player on the day. She was very steady and consistent and made fewer mistakes overall. If I were Katie I'd skip Eastbourne and focus on Wimbledon. With a bit of luck and a decent draw she could do quite well as long as her serve is working better than yesterday.
I was keen to see the Kostyuk v Potapova match as I'd never seen either live at an event. It was a very good quality match with two talented young players. Kostyuk obviously comes into every match with a lot of baggage but she played pretty well but Potapova was simply immense. Made very few mistakes that weren't forced. The power she hits with off both backhand and forehand is really up there with the biggest hitters in the game. She lacks a bit of finesse around the net and doesn't have much of a plan B but she's young and playing like she did yesterday could possibly cause quite a bit of damage at Wimbledon.
On a side note the noise coming from the main court during the Burrage Dart match was clearly favouring Jodie. Much much louder cheers for her winning a point or game than Dart.

Potapova was Wimbledon junior singles champion back in 2016.
