Week 25 - WTA250 - Birmingham, Great Britain Grass

Freya & Ali into a MTB, 7-6(6) 4-6

The last 2 weeks have seen R1 exits in MTBs after taking the first set. Could do with winning this one

I couldn't be bothered to go and check but I had it in my mind that they'd come close and not quite crossed the line in the other events, so thanks for that

Great win ! Very pleased for them - must have been a bit nervy on court, given the previous two matches, I enjoyed watching that MTB

Yay, 7-6(6) 4-6 [10-7]

60 ( net 31 ) points added takes them up to live ranked joint 106.

Did they win it though?

At 8-6*, they clearly lost the point, yet the scoreboard moved to 9-6*. They lost the next point, then won the next, and apparently the match.

But I think the umpire got the score wrong and noone noticed, I cant see any reason for the point to our girls being awarded to them (Freya netted).

I'll wait until the replay is up and watch again incase I missed something (a touch or something by their opponents).

Yeah I've just watched it back. Umpire calls it 7-5 at change of ends. We then have:

Ali with a putaway for *8-5

Ali double faults *8-6

Freya nets and the players clearly think B/N have won the point, but the scoreboard moves to 9-6*, and the umpire calls that score with no reaction.

Ali misses the return, scoreboard moves to 9-7*

The girls win the point and all the players go to the net.

I was watching and also flicking to Evo's match so, sorry, I can't help - seems surprising that all 4 of them would miss it though... (and the others, in particular)

Well, she may not win, but Venus has taken the first set off Giorgi
Which is no mean achievement....

Wow - Venus just won in three long sets, over a top-50 player - and Venus is age 43 - it's just amazing !

disbelief  ****! That sort of seals her WC. I was hoping she'd lose and retire to the legends

Well, given her auto-immune disease, she might just have half-cooked herself, poor woman, and then you might get your wish another way.....smileno

I mean she couldn't take more than 2 steps to either side but it was worth it for that smile at the end. She's a legend.

Hoping Katie can continue her good form from Nottingham into Birmingham tomorrow against a Top 40 opponent.

How far does Jodie have to get this week to make it into the Top 100?

Probably final unless there is an astonishing set of results in Ilkley and Gaiba this week, and a few favourable results in Berlin and Birmingham, in which case, semi-final.

The calendar is out of sync with last year so Eastbourne's points are dropping this week, in Jodie's case 55 points, she's at 572 points in live rankings, while Olga Danilovic has 671 in 100th place after her win in Gaiba, Caroline Dolehide has already lost so can't improve on her 676 points, Tomova 680 points is still playing in Birmingham as a lucky loser. Realistically, Jodie would have to overtake some of the players not competing this week who have between 684 (Shnaider) and 692 (Mandlik and Leylah Fernandez).

If Jodie reached the semi-final, she'd be on 681 points. Getting to the final would take her to 751 points.

OER have a WTA race but including points from ITF events (so points won from best 16 tournaments in 2023 usual rules on having to include main draw Slams/Indian Wills/Miami etc). Currently, Sonay 197th, Katie Swan 194th, Fran Jones 187th, Emma 169th, Harriet 144th, Heather 106th, Jodie 98th, Katie Boulter 49th - players that have played fewer events may be under-ranked slightly.

So for instance, Jodie's 398 points from 11 events in 2023 is probably in a stronger position than Olivia Gadecki 410 from 18 events, Dayana Yastremska also 410 from 18, Diane Parry 417 from 19. Harriet seems to be the opposite, with the players immediately below her, having played far fewer tournaments.

Have tickets for today but the weather doesn't look too good for this morning. I've been to this tournament since the first one and often seem to be cursed by bad weather. So I'm going on Friday as well so I'd advise anyone else to get tickets for the other days based on my weather luck in Birmingham.

Anyone in Birmingham with an update?

Some intriguing matches today especially from a GB perspective.

Do so hope you get to see some tennis, HarryG

It's all in the lap of the gods but really frustrating, especially if it's happened to you several times before

Fingers crossed....
