U14 Junior International - Tennis Europe - Category 1 - Roehampton, GB (Week 24)

This is the only grasscourt U14 event

It was held for the first time last year as a lead-up event to the inaugral U14 Wimbledon championships

It was won by Mika S, in the girls, and a Romanian boy

Both the winner and the finalist in boys and girls qualify automatically for the U14 Wimbly event

Are you sure the RU qualifies? I know that was the case last year, but the fact sheet this year only mentions the winners qualifying. Just wondering if its an omission on the fact sheet or TE have changed how they're allocating their 2nd spot this year.

The draws are now up on Tennis Europe Mark Ceban withdrew last week, but may well get an invite to Wimbledon as TE1 Hollie Smart is top seed and Edie Griffiths 4th while Rhys Lawlor is seeded 4th in the boys

The top 4 seeds in both events progressed to round 2, though a few of the minor seeds lost out. Live scores are available here .

I thought we had a particularly successful day in the girls yesterday

We had 12 victories, including 9 which were wins in GB v foreign matches (and three in all-GB matches)

Congrats especially to Eva Hutchins who beat the 5th seed, and Clarice Ouvarova who beat the 8th seed

Rhys Lawlor (4) won his match

But good hopes such as Niall and Dan Joita lost

However, Sam Zlotnik also got a win

And pride of place goes to Pavana Nrshinga who beat the 2nd seed from Israel, in three sets

Girls continue to do well, although the foreign 2nd and 3rd seeds had no trouble.

Hollie Smart won 6-0 6-0

As did Edie Griffiths, our next best 2009-er here

I'm thrilled that Megan (two years younger, born 2011) has also won, as has Sevil Parviz (born 2010)

Congrats to Lara Savic (a new name to me) who put out the 7th seed in a third set tb

From Collette's site, this is the LTA new matrix for how U14 Wimbledon Championship spots will be handed out:

"In terms of the 14U Championships, the draw size is the same as last year (16) and we will be continuing with just Singles. Matches will be played from Thursday 13 July Sunday 16 July, and the players will have the opportunity to practice for three days prior at our Roehampton Grounds.

Following a review of the 2022 competition, and the desire by the AELTC to ensure the very best 14&U players compete in the competition, the entry criteria was refined for 2023.

The new hybrid model will see the first eight places offered to top-ranked players in that age category, with the remaining places awarded via a number of qualifying tournaments.

Entry Criteria

Number of places

Top 14&U ranked players - 8

Asian grass court tournament, Saga Club, Japan - 2

South American grass court tournament, Copa Cosat, Brazil - 2

Tennis Europe, Roehampton, UK - 1

Tennis Australia, 14u Australian Championships Wodonga Tennis Centre - 1

LTA Qualification Tournament, LTA Grade 1 East Glos, UK - 2

Regarding the selection of the top ranked players, the following criteria was taken into consideration (as of March 31):

WTN Ranking
UTR Ranking
Tennis Europe Ranking
Results at leading 14&U International Tournaments including Les Petits As, Stockholm, Maia, Orange Bowl
Any other relevant criteria that the Professional Tennis Committee / 14&U Championships Referee deem fit"

Based on the entry table that Colette put up, there doesn't seem to be any room for any wildcards (although presumably they get a wildcard if, say, the winner/finalist of E Glos is the same as the winner of Roehampton and frees up a spot)

But, like you, I assume Mark clearly qualifies as one of the top 8 U14s, so it really doesn't matter if he plays any qualifiying events or not

Seemingly the US Penickova twins have been selected, as well as Marcel Latak and Izyan Ahmad for the boys. I assume that is under the top 8 U14s slightly discretionary assessment, as that's the way Colette has presented it, and there were no qualifying events in the US

Hi - this is interesting to read - who is Colette, please and do you have a link to her website? Also , have these qualifying events in Asia, South America, Australia, East Glos,  been played, so are those places known now? Thanks!!

Presumably the qualifying events have all taken place now and the players above are all known?
