So close to a surprisingly routine win for Heather against a very inconsistent Niemeier, but then she threw in 2 DFs and a poor BH long to lose a 30-0 lead when she was serving for it.
Goes up 30-0. Double faults, which leads to a tentative second serve which is destroyed, which leads to another double fault. Backhand long.
Sigh
5-3*
Fortunately the German is unable to get enough first serves in, and most of her groundstrokes are landing half way up the net. Heather is through! (Shame she didn't play that badly at Wimbledon 12 months ago!)

She gets by with a little help from her opponent, taking it on her second MP on the Niemeier serve. No doubt Niemeier not comfortable on the grass yet, but Heather played some nice stuff today and great to see her take it in straight sets (for once!).
Is it written that they HAVE to give a WC to Wickmayer? It may be harsh but if she's that good why isn't she in the top 100 now and in the MD by right? It's not our concern if the timing isn't right for her and it's not as if the other slams are sentimental enough to help out foreign players at the expense of their own.

Yes, pretty sure it's guaranteed, as is the other one (Ilkley, I think)
That policy for Ilkley and Surbiton is quite annoying. It might've made sense when there were fewer nailed-on cases for MD wildcards in the past, but I think you could justify WCs for all our ranked players down to Miyazaki (and probably Sonay too). They don't need the policy to encourage players to come either, since it's the grass season and there's a small window to get high level match play in.

It's giving WCs to players that have produced the goods on grass going into Wimbledon. At least it's a reasonably relevant objective criterion.
And our main contenders were at Surbiton, did pretty well, but ultimately Wickmayer was the champion.
