Oh boy, that one's gonna sting. A match they could have won several times. I know in women's tennis you can't expect to always hold your serve, but that does feel like their weakness at the moment; they were rallying perfectly well with two good singles players, they just couldn't rely on their serve when it counted.
Actually, their overall serving stats were better than their opponents all round - just didn't win the critical points. Too many volleys were just defensive though and could have won points more easily.
2 hours 39 minutes is pretty long for a three set doubles match.
We have no singles entrants in the main draw, neither as direct entrants nor any who have come through qualis
However, it seems right to have a thread
Firstly, officially to note the lack of GB female participants
For forum posterity, so to speak
And, secondly, in case there are other matches/performances that people want to discuss/note (I know this is a GB forum, but it is a Grand Slam )
Call me cynical but how can Jodie be fit enough to practice on grass this week but not French Open qualifying?
Very easily I imagine, considering we are talking about practice against competition. In any case if she could have just about made it to French Open Q, after her injury it seems to me to make quite a bit of sense to skip it and concentrate on being more prepared for the grass season where she did very well last year. Don't quite understand the implied accusation regarding if she was fit.
Long piece derived from "an interview with" Jessica Pegula, BBC Sport Columnist on preparing for the French Open, coping with the long clay season in Europe, staving off illness and boredom, and enjoying seeing the tourist sights.
Jessica says that Americans tend to dwindle if they stay too long in Europe. That's why the Brits voted for Brexit, Jessica. [ only joking, folks, smile.gif ]
Did anyone else see the Japanese girl getting disqualified today? I watched this several times, she was tapping a ball back across court, the ball girl was running across and it struck her. No anger, nothing untoward. The girl started crying. I dont know if she was hurt. But three things struck me:
1) It was not angry, it was a mistake where the girl and ball collided
2) opponents - made it into a big deal by drawing attention to the ball girl crying - what started as a warning quickly escalated and became a disqualification
3) forgive me - the girl got hit, but badly hurt? Distressed? really - she was possibly shocked but she made a mountain out of a molehill, I think.
But whatever the answer to 2 and 3, surely this didnt deserve a DQ? Really? Ridiculous!!

The Ball Girl's reaction was very strange, there was little pace on the ball and it barely glanced her shoulder, although Bouzkova and SST were pretty cynical to insist on a DQ.

Absolutely.
But money is so tight for some of these players and points matter so much, so you could say:
4) Ridiculous that the umpire didn't know the rules and had to be overturned by the tournament referee
I think it's a shame the players insisted, and I think the end result was daft.
But I understand: from my understanding the players were only applying the rules (which doesn't say anything about her crying or not, it wasn't the issue). So the takeaway is modify the rules.
OR - players -
5) don't hit a ball (however gently) that does not bounce and hits the ballkid straight on
These are world class tennis players, they know how to hit a ball in every single whichway - just be more careful
I absolutely agree that any rules / guidance that say this should be a disqualification are not fit for purpose. I see CD's point about being careful but very minor incidents like this can easily happen without much thought and certain;y without any bad intent. The punishment is ridiculous for the 'crime'.
Reminded me of Naomi Broady quite a few years ago in Australia being pretty embarrassing against Ostapeko. Jelena idly tossed her racket pretty gently to her side in frustration after a miss. It then took a bounce and diverted backwards to gently hit a ball boy. Naomi lost the plot in screaming at the umpire for Jelena to be defauled. It was probably a bit OTT that Jelena even got an official warning and basically this was an earlier example of silliness.
Just to be clear, I think the opponents were out of order in insisting the others were defaulted.
I hope it comes to bite them on the b*m in the locker-room - what goes around comes around and all that - and it was really spiteful
But I do think the rule is daft, if that's what the rules says, and having an umpire who doesn't know the rule is a bad look, and that it's not difficult for them to hit the ball carefully
But, yep, I was really glad that Sara ST lost today
