Boys & Girls: J30 Wrexham, GB - hard (Week 21)

Nice to see a low-ranking event - we've seemingly stopped doing 15ks at adult level but at least we have a few J30s left. Everyone needs an entry point....

Boys

Big congrats to Theo Coates who beat the top seed yesterday, 7-5 in the third

Wildcard Rhys Lawlor (only 14 and a highly regarded player) got a win - his first one, I think, at ITF level so well done to him

Wil Jepson (a new name to me) beat the 8th seed very easily

Ilias Worthington is second seed. Max Carrier is 3rd and Jay Johnson-Hauldren 4

Girls

Ukranian Kliuch is top seed and won yesterday.

13 year-old Scarlett Kavanagh beat 7th seed Arabella Loftus - pleased about that

And pleased to see 14 year-old Isabella Britton get a win

Mia Wainwright is 2nd seed, Cheuk YingShek from HK 3rd and Brooke Black 4th

Some very good results amongst the girls:

Girls QF:

Elizabeth Evans (2007) def. (1) UKR 6-2 6-2

Brooke Black (2007) def. (8) Tegan Bush (2008) 6-3 6-1

Alice Wilson-Marsh (2008) def (3) HKG 6-3 7-6(4)

(2) Mia Wainwright (2007) def. Isabelle Britton (2008) 6-4 7-6(6)

Brilliant win from Elizabeth over the top seed
Excellent win from Alice against the 3rd seed
Very good score from Isa Britton against the 2nd seed

And so that's an all-GB semi line-up

I like Elizabeth Evans and Brooke Black games and they will do well at this level.
Both have struggled though against older girls with a bit of power

I thought the 2008 cohort here were far more interesting

Apart from Mika, this is a big chunk of our very best 2008-ers.

But there are a lot of better 2007-ers out there

It's me, CD!  Big fan of Alice's but then again, I'm a big fan of Brooke Black too!  Mika rarely appears in these types of tournaments with contemporaries and hasn't done so for years - it's a great strategy by the coach or parents.....some of these girls have beaten Mika, so it's best avoided.  Always best to say "I got beaten by an older girl" rather than by a contemporary.

Thanks, TW18 ! Sorry I couldn't remember who it was .....

I've never seen Alice play - I'm looking forward to it

Does she have anything that particulalry stands out? Or is it more a very good all-round game?

I've seen Brooke twice and for me, the jury's out - the first time I though, oh yes, this is really interesting, and then the second time I was very underwhelmed - I don't mean as to playing well or poorly, as such, but about the fundamentals; it was a bit bizarre, so I put it down to me, rather than her, and thought I'd wait and see....

Count me as another who finds himself baffled by Brooke. I was impressed with how she used the geometry of the court the first time I saw her play; she seems to have a 'wristier' game in comparison to other GB juniors, and I expected her to be consistently playing at J100 level by now. So I think it's a bit of a shame for her to be plugging away at a fairly minor event in Wrexham, even if she has coasted to the final without any problems.
