From Tennis365 an hour ago re Heather:

Her win over Niemeier in Nottingham will do little to boost her current ranking of 195, which will leave her needing a wild card if she is to get direct entry into this years event at SW19.

Asked whether she will have to qualify, she said: I dont know, I have applied for a wild card so I hope I get one.

She's up 29 places to live 166 and brings her back to the rear of the pack. If that's not boosting her ranking I dont know what is. And whether she gets direct entry or needs a wild card was decided weeks ago, she could 'boost' her ranking to the top 50 and it still wouldn't matter a jot to needing a WC. Seriously, is that the quality of journalism from a tennis site?

Given Heather reached the last 16 and would be ranked circa 120 if those points had counted, its pretty fair to expect shed get a wildcard , shes de facto British number one ?!

Katie B reached the 3rd round last year so she would still be the no 1

Fair enough, nonetheless a ranking of 120 or wherever would get anyone a wildcard historically, I would say. ditto for Katie B.

Also Emma reached R2 so would be GB #2, although clearly not relevant re this year's WCs.

Some might say everyone knew they were playing for no ranking points, though actually I don't really think that made any difference ( it never was the 'exhibition event' that one or two here predicted ). Possibly a bit more relevant is it was of course an event lacking quite a number of strong Russian and Belarusian players.

Yes, a ranking of 120 would historically get a Brit a MD WC.. Gee, a ranking of 200 would. That's the whole potential problem in that we have 5 players who in any other year would be shoo-ins.

Of course there are strong cases for Heather and Katie B,. But so there are for are for Jodie, Katie S and Harriet. And with different metrics I reckon I could make a case for just about any of them over other ones.

Let us hope there end up being at least 5 vacancies and a choice doesn't have to be made, even allowing for Lily and / or Sonay not suddenly doing anything to complicate things further.

I rather liked someone on the other thread saying 'and wouldn't it be funny if Emily App beat Katie B today?'

Or, say, if Emily App made the semis here

i.e. another completely unexpected wildcard contender

With the LTA going 'oh, Lord, that's all we need......'

Mind you, the quote from Heather that I posted says she's 'applied' for a wildcard - I didn't realise you had to apply - I mean, would someone like Emily App actually apply for a singles wildcard?

I didn't realise they needed to apply either.

I would've gone with the mindset that if you don't ask (apply) you don't get. Might as well throw your hat into the ring as it were.

Wonder if they have to justify the reason for applying for one...? Would love to know more about this!

I believe there is an interview panel of 3 with an assessment centre where they put them through various psychometric tests, a group exercise and a presentation. It is quite thorough, usually held first week of French open when not many of them have other commitments. solid process if a bit long winded

And this would be even funnier if there wasn't a grain of truth #hopeless

I think you've forgotten page 5 of the requirements: 'have to be able to host pre-dinner drinks, smile and not have a parent that causes grief'

Mens process is different, there is some sort of obstacle course and they build a raft to get across the lake at Aorangi Park.
