Sexism at the Madrid Open

This thread is prompted by a brief exchange I had with Elegant Point last week on the Madrid Open men's singles thread & the appearance of the BBC report a couple of hours ago.

More issues arising out of the organisation of the tournament.  Not exactly covering themselves with glory, are they?  disbelief

Without wishing to appear xenophobic, I'm not totally convinced that all countries have the same attitude to sexism that we do in the UK, despite what the publicity says.

I once - relatively recently - spent a very sad couple of years on a multi-national programme where we had a British Project Manager, and French and Italian Deputy Project Managers. In their wisdom, my company appointed a female to the PM role, and the Europeans - unsurprisingly - appointed males to the DPM roles. The rampant sexism that occurred in the team was completely unmanageable, despite my company trying to do everything in their power to suppress it. It wasn't helped, it has to be said, by the PM going on maternity leave after a year.

Interesting story, Chris, & dispiriting.  I would venture to suggest that it's not just a difference in attitude between the UK & some other countries, but that there's something of a north-south divide in Europe vis-à-vis such matters...

I did notice the outfits changed for the final, the ball girls were in hideous wide leg cropped trousers that looked like theyd been made from tenting fabric, but still wearing (longer) cropped tops

The link SC posted cited the size of the birthday cakes as example of how women players were treated differently to men at the Madrid Open,.
In the words of Billie Jean King, Everyone thinks women should be thrilled when we get crumbs, and I want women to have the cake, the icing and the cherry on top too.

Considering how quiet Azarenka has been on the Ukraine situation, I find it laughable she was so vocal on the size of the cakes.

Azarenka used to be one of my faves, but you just get the impression from what little she does say, that she supports what's happening in Ukraine.

 My guess is that a lot of Russians and Belorussians do: after all their governments do. They may have been convinced not to say anything very loudly, as they want to continue doing their day jobs.
