Really disappointed with this, makes her PC yesterday just look like a petulant brat. The WTA has some strong and consistent players for the first time in years, but the WTA is still struggling - and this attitude definitely makes me feel a little bit more negative about the future. At Indian Wells things looked like they could become promising, now I'm really not sure she'll ever have a career on tour.
She had probably just received advice that the wrist could be career threatening and had been in arguments with her team about playing. She was probably just trying to come to terms with what had happened and felt more like bursting into tears than giving an interview. It just looked like a very bad time for an interview.
Whatever is happening for Emma right now it feels really sad. She must be down mentally. How can she not be. If she really wants to play and constant injuries/illness keep preventing her. We all know what a good player Emma is and what she can bring on court. But for all her success winning the US Open and I applaud that. It is hers for ever. I do feel it has become a weight around her neck for some time now. She went from zero to hero as they say. That on it's own was beyond massive for someone to suddenly find themselves in the spotlight 24/7. I am not a massive fan of the way sponsors pile it all on somebody so young and they hope to get a return for their money. Emma for all her talent had not had chance to win a W25, W60, W100 etc and build up that momentum. So I have always been a bit worried for her in that respect. But now will the big sponsors stick with her now when she has fallen out the worlds top 100 and needs help and time clearly to sort out all the things currently affecting her. I like Emma. She is a breath of fresh air for British tennis and of course like Andy showed you can win a Grand Slam with GB after your name. I really hope we don't see her for a while now. Miss the French Open and Wimbledon. Us fans will get over it. Get herself completely right, refreshed and happy to go again. I just pray her wrist injury is not career ending. Please let that not happen to her. But as a fan I don't mind seeing her starting over in a 25K somewhere with her ranking right down as long as she is fit, healthy and happy. The press not all over her and she can just work her way back up nice and steady. I think that would be good for her. But right now as a parent myself I would not want to see my child look so down and fed up. Step back now Emma, take your time and get yourself right. Please if you think I am talking twaddle here don't shoot me down. It's just my view on it and I enjoy reading what the others posters think. I'm just a humble tennis fan who sadly lives with a long term spinal condition. If Emma's injured, then stop now, get it sorted however long it takes.
On another side to all this how many here ever thought we might soon see Jodie as the British #1.
I dont think her sponsors will ditch Emma for a long while yet. After Serena went Emma is the only one with social media reach, well up on Swiatek and Sabelenka. I think they will stick with her. I am just wondering how long she will stick with tennis? She has the skill set and intelligence to try something else if need be - did I read she deferred a place at Cambridge? Anyway I hope she sticks with the tennis and finds her level again but it is a real worry. I just keep on thinking about Laura Robson- such a shame when Laura had to retire.

Exactly. And I think we should remember that she's still a very young woman. I just can't imagine the kind of nonsense I would have said at that age. Journalists always do this fake naive thing where they say they were just asking questions. But it's generally more than that as they love getting under players' skins so they can write a further piece about how unreasonable the player was being. They didn't just take her first answer they dug around and kept asking. I know that's their job but it must be really aggravating sometimes. Go on Youtube to see how irritated Scarlett Johansen gets when they ask her about what underwear she wears under her catsuit and she's a lot older than Emma.
It's Emma's career at stake and I can understand why she's upset and doesn't really want to talk about it. She's generally behaved really well on court and in interviews and I don't think she should be taken to task for having one bad day when she's more than likely heard some bad news.
Maybe I've been too harsh, I just really love watching her play. It's just really sad to see she hasn't been able to get a week in week out stretch going since the US Open.

Seriously, that happened. Words fail me other than disgusting, inappropriate and not relevant.

Media can be terrible at times.
When was Emma asked this!? Ewwwww. That would NEVER be a question for a man.
I'm not so sure that the wrist injury has got worse. I don't really see the benefit for Emma, from where she is now, to be playing Swiatek on clay. She'd know it would be extremely difficult, and could result in another spell out with injury. Better to withdraw now before round 1, than face a media storm by withdrawing before having to face Swiatek. I think Raducanu really wants to drop down a level, so she can develop her game, and chasing a few points in Madrid on clay against strong opposition would be counter to that aim. Also, the grass season is going to be super important for the GB players, so got to be right for that.

I am hugely doubtful that the draw has had anything at all to with Emma's withdrawal.

Not Emma! Scarlett Johansen. Just saying that even older people get fed up with being asked irritating questions repeatedly!

The question asked of Scarlett Johansen wasn't an irritating question though, it was a misogynistic question.

It was both misogynistic and irritating. I don't think people can only get irritated by misogynistic questions. It's also annoying to be asked the same question you've just answered. The fact they get the rise out of her is not surprising. To write a whole article about it is over the top and unnecessary in my view and to pretend they were just asking a 'reasonable' question is stretching credibility.
I see an Egyptian, Mayar Sherif, is in the last 8 - new name to me but great to see
In my teens I started watching Wimbledon on TV. My interest really grew when I decided to back an Egyptian to win the mens singles and followed him round after round right through to the final. I have been following tennis ever since, though I haven't always been so fortunate it my later choices of who to support.
