Emily has the first set 7-5

Playing nicely, too, looking comfortable on the clay (although it's close)

Enjoyed watching that set (and Kyle at the same time)

It would be easy to say what a shame, Emily had it (which she sort of did)

BUT the other girl sort of had it too - there really was nothing between them - lots of breaks - Emily's backhand slice let her down a couple of times when it mattered - but good, tidy tennis, with a nice base to raise the ante just a little bit ....

4-6 in the second and into a third set...

Truly beyond riciulous

A very tight match, Emily manages to get the upper hand in the third set

Right up to 5-2

And then she completely goes to pieces - doubles faults, patsy tennis, awful UEs

and loses 5 games on the trot

Just ridiculous

Totally my fault, I started watching the match at 5-2 in the 3rd.

16 double faults. Ouch.

The bit of the match I saw, it looked like Emily did not really want to be on the court. Was it fear of losing, or was the match just an opportunity for some practice before the doubles draw? It was hard to tell which. Either way, a capitulation from a very winnable position.

Old Beady Eyes, that me You're right, it wasn't even a remotely plausible reason for the abrupt course shift that the match took. I was unable to comprehend the tennis being played, yet wanted to convey some explanation nevertheless.

Yep, it 100% wasn't you foobarbaz - she really has to look in the mirror for that one no

I know the serve went to pieces, and that caused mayhem in all other aspects of the play, but there seemed to be the mentality of just hit the ball harder as a way to fight back. On the clay that's not what's required, is it?. You're not gonna hit past someone, if you don't have the angle. The opponent if stretched can just flip it back, or if in position they can use the pace from your ball and add to it. Emily was trying for one shot winners, whereas on clay the winner is set-up by the preceding few strokes. Her opponent was calm and patient, not doing too much, just waiting for Emily to go for too much and to make the same error once more. What I couldn't understand is, why that mentality, isn't that something that coaching should rectify?

I guess the problem, foo, is that she wasn't playing like that before in the match - so it's not really the mentality overall that's the problem.

Before the end of the third set, she was constructing points well, playing good clay court tennis.

I think it was just the tension and stress that got to her.

And that's SO difficult to coach because you can't replicate it for real.

Also, she's a player that relies heavily on her serve (it's about her best shot) - not to win the point as such but to set herself off in the point. And when the serve goes, the rest of her game goes down the tube. (Unlike players with weak serves who know their serve is going to be dodgy). And it's a vicious circle coz it ratttled her and then it got even worse.

So, yes, I think there's coaching to be done, but more on 'what to do when your serve looks like it's deserted you'

She also needs to come in, jsut a little more, IMO. She stood off, and got herself in trouble.
