Well done Sonay - good solid long rallies suit Sonay as she is so good defensively and is super fit.
As for Makarova, she tanked the end of set 2 and her attitude stinks
Awesome! Sonay has actually had a really solid start to the year, she's just come up against some good players - so it's nice to see her get her reward. Must be our biggest clay court title for a while on the women's side?
Well done Sonay! Great to be back to winning ways, on the clay and away from the UK, and hopefully now into the RG-QD and on this form, could cause a few upsets.
With now 5 titles at $25K/W25 level, Ms. Kartal ties in 3rd place amongst GB women this millennium. The others with 5 such titles: Bally, Gabi Taylor
Most $25K/W25 titles this millennium by a GB woman is 6 achieved by both Keothavong & Swan.
Hopefully, Ms. Kartal will never win another $25K/W25 - by which I mean: may all her many future titles come at even higher levels.
As previously discussed in earlier threads, I don't really think Sonay had particularly ever gone off the boil. Since last year's grass season she has largely been playing up a level or two and although suffering rather more losses than wins was still pretty competive when she played which was not over frequently.. She has still generally looked a top 200 player. Just not particularly adding many ranking points saw her ranking drop.
Good though to have matches, wins and a title here. And indeed a couple of very good looking wins. And with further Italy W25s pencilled in for the next 2 weeks we'll maybe let her win one or two of these too before going winning titles at higher levels
