Week 14 - WTA500 - Charleston, USA Clay

Broke but was broken straight back. Every time I watch she is giving Mateas the run around, but then somehow gets herself dragged back down.

*3-4

*5-4

Heather was a couple of points away at 30-30* and deuce but Mateas dug in well. Decent serve she's got.

Serves it out to love. Still bemused as to how it was so close, but she won.

Lisicki hit 17 aces in that match, out of 40 first serves in. cry

The other seed in Heather's section was (q6) Taylor Townsend. But she withdrew. Baptiste came in as an alt and comfortably won her QR1.

Phew Heather not having it easy these days. You have no idea what to expect from any match she plays of late because suddenly from nowhere she could give a cracking performance and take out a bigger name. Let's hope she can go on and qualify.

I can't remember a time when she has been consistant. When she plays it's time to hide behind the sofa and listen for the result.

I always feel she plays better against better opponents, but when playing lower ranked players her standard drops. No concrete facts to back this up though.

I can't quantify her standard of play, but in terms of results in the last 52 weeks Heather has won 43% of her matches against players ranked higher than her (10-13) and 70% of matches against players ranked lower than her (21-9).

In those matches against players ranked lower than her, she is 11-3 against top 200 players and 10-6 against players outside the top 200. Drilling into that further, she seems to struggle particularly against players ranked 200 to 300 where she is 3-6 in the last 52 weeks. Perhaps, also worth noting that the 2 players she has played outside the top 500 in the last 52 weeks, she lost the 1st set on a tie break before going on to win the match.

So perhaps her results do provide some support to your thoughts.
