Mike Shaw won the first set against the second seed

And came so close to the second but lost in a TB

Can't help fearing the worst now, but this would be a huge win for him, so allez, Mike, I'm sending good vibes !

 Now 3-3 in a tiebreak.

I lost count of the number of match points which came & went in the ninth game of the decider & also the number of break points young Mr Shaw staved off before he finally capitulated.

Jaysus, and all the saints preserve us (and any other religious entities that want to be involved!)

Mike was 5-2 up in games.

Oliel held serve

Then Mike served for it. Got to 40-0. Three MPs (obviously). Lost them. Had another at Adv. Lost it. Maybe another...

Got into a tie-break. 3-1 up. Then back to 3-3

And then won it !!!!!

I'm not even a particular fan of Mike Shaw - but I was having a stomach acid attack on his behalf !

VERY pleased that he won - well done, that man

I missed all the excitement (fortunately from the sound of it!). It was all calm for me. Three all in the tiebreak and he won the next four points to win the match. Yay!

Well done, Michael !

Must have been CD's "can't help fearing the worst now" good vibes

I was fearing the worst SO much that I was sending ZILLIONS of good vibes - literally staring at the screen and WILLING it to move in the right direction.....

And I take all credit for the result, obviously......

(As said, it was a little weird, actually, I don't know why, but I was majorly heavily invested in that match....no)

Don't be.  Rather than ask you for a translation into proper English, I turned to my good friend, Google, for an explanation & came across this delightful Grauniad article from 2017.  I've never heard of the majority of the phrases Justin Myers includes in his list, nor do I feel as though I've missed out as a result, but I absolutely loved his comments on "totes", one of the many which had/have blessedly passed me by.  wink

Oh, Hamish - you are the man !

(A true fave, ever since that Bank of England junior win over the obnoxious Moutet)

A third-set tiebreak win - I love it

I absolutely loved this article and share Justin's distaste for some of them: particularly bantz, sleeps, school night and hubby

I think that's a very respectable score, and the end to a very successful week for young Zach:

L16: (3) Robert Strombachs (GER) WR 480 def. (WC) Zach Stephens UNR (age 16) 6-1 7-5

Another loss but another very respectable score against someone far higher ranked

L16: Petr Nesterov (BUL) WR 774 def. (Q) Michael Shaw WR 1596 6-3 7-6(3)
