The second of the high grade Latin American hard court events didn't get off to the best start from a British perspective, as both Oliver Bonding and Hugo Coquelin lost in qualifying via match tiebreaks. The main draw sees Henry Searle pitted against the 14 year old star who is on a 30 match unbeaten run after claiming the San Jose title (and would be top seed on this week's rankings). Should Henry win he may play the Costa Rica runner-up, who beat him last week
I missed the fact that we had 4 girls in qualifying - Ellie Blackford, Ruby Cooling, Daniela Piani and Given Roach. Only Ellie reached final qualifying, unfortunately retiring against the girl who now faces Imogen (a girl who double bagelled Hannah Klugman in the world juniors and trounced Mimi Xu in the Orange Bowl)
The other round 1 matches are today. In doubles Imogen+ and Phoenix+ registered wins. Here is an article about Thijs Boogaard's incredible record-breaking run
Boys R1 (L32)
Luca Pow d. Tianhui Zhang (CHN) 6-4 6-3 (SE) Thijs Boogaard (NED) v Henry Searle (LL) Jose Murariu (USA) v Phoenix Weir
Girls R1 (L32)
Imogen Haddad v (Q) Shannon Lam (USA) Isabelle Lacy d. Gloriana Nahum (BEN) 6-3 1-0 rtd (8) Hephzibah Oluwadare v Piper Charney (USA)
Henry has finally broken the run of Boogaard. Nice straight sets win for him. Phoenix also goes through.
Sadly Imogen had to retire when 0-3 down in the first set. Hep lost her first round match in the singles. Better luck in the doubles, she goes through to the next round with Isabelle.
Luca and Henry sail through their doubles match but Oliver Bonding+ loses in the first round.
Isabelle up against the number 4 seed today, Henry the 8th seed, Luca the number 1 seed and Phoenix the number 2 seed. A tough day to come!

Great result for Henry, though playing Thijs immediately after his second big title may have been helpful. Unfortunate that he has to play Horovitz as expected again - that won't happen in the early stages next week (Colombia) as both will be seeded. The Peruvian second seed has all his scoring tournaments on clay, so Phoenix may have an opportunity.

In a bit of an about turn in fortunes, Henry couldn't follow up his high profile win yesterday but Phoenix anihilated the second seed (and vvery good effort from Luca agains the top seed):

Been a strange old week for British tennis - a rare one with v little to cheer about.
At least there are around 46 weeks to go in 2023 and most arent this way!
Reaching a final is something to be proud about JonH
you're correct of course, DF, I think I wasn't aiming so much at these guys as generally just commenting that it hadn't been a good week in reaction to the sad times post above...
But yes, these 4 deserve a round of applause for reaching the final here.
