Just my tuppence worth, but - yes - I thought Emma played well - I thought the coach was getting her to do the right things - it was really pretty close - she made a couple of lose errors on important points in the first set and was behind in the second (whether with a rib strain or not). Coco's complete mental AWOL moment gave Emma a great chance which, if she'd been just a little more match savvy, she'd have taken advantage of and we'd have had a third set at least.

But good to see Emma hitting the ball well, getting some great penetration, serving well (overall), and seemingly with a plan, not lost and cross on the court as she was for so much of last year.

And a big bravo to Coco for managing to get herself out a hole, and get her arm swinging again

Leylah F has just lost to Caro Garcia - which is no disgrace at all, great match, and Caro is in great form

But given there's not really a huge difference between someone who wins a Slam and the runner-up (well, of course there is for the glory and and the records but if you've got 128 players and you're number 1 or number 2 it's not really any difference in level), it's interesting that no one really focuses on Leylah's 'disappointments' and all on Emma's (although maybe some minor Canadian newspapers that I never see are different)

I love watching Garcias game there was some really clutch moments in that match. To be honest the best player overall lost poor Layla but the big points and moments on Carolines serve she aced or found a way. Really high quality match, I can see the womens tournament being one of the best and strongest in years hopefully Caroline gets a Slam.

I'm pretty sure Leylah would have been happy to put up with the increased scrutiny Emma gets in return for the US Open title.

Newspapers, particularly tabloids, love to flog an angle, which is why I've given up reading them much. With Andy it was all about him being Scottish rather than British for years, until he won a few GSs and he finally got that monkey off his back. With Emma, it's about her being a flash in the pan, which creates the narrative on SM that she should just give up and become a model or a house wife. I mean FGS she's a top 100 player, that's a hell of an achievement and lots of players would be over the moon with that, let alone having won a GS at such a young age. If she could get a run of tournaments injury free she's clearly got the talent to regularly be a top player. Hopefully, she takes it all with a pinch of salt.

I see that the 17 year-old Czech girl (Linda F) who's been mentionted a fair bit in the juniors, and is one of the leading figures of Rothenberg's #variousCzechteenagers, has won again and is now into the last 16, which is pretty amazing

I think we are now starting to see a group of elite players on the women's side plus a few young superstars on the rise that are very marketable. Something that has not happened for a while.

Swiatek, Jabeur, Pegula, Garcia, Sabalenka, Gauff, Bencic and potentially Krejchikova

Obviously Radacanu, Fruhvitova, L Fernández, Andreescu are the new kids on the block

Then you have the old guard still knocking around like Kvitova
