Week 3 - Australian Open Grand Slam - Melbourne, Australia Hard

Surprisingly good was that.

In the first set Emma's lack of matches showed as she didn't always pick the best play but she became more confident in the 2nd, attacking more and moving in quickly to finish the point. She will need to raise her game to beat Gauff and could do with getting a few more first serves in but that was about as good a start as Emma could have hoped in her first match back after injury, so she has a chance against Gauff.

Decent performance from Emma. Impressive attacking intent; return position inside the court for both first and second serves, 7 drop shots (won 6 of those points), 5 drive volleys (won 4), went for backhand down the line and some very big forehands. Negatives: first serve was disappointing in the first set (only won 50%), struggled to land her wide serve from deuce side and not much quality on T serves either. Had spells when her first groundstroke after her serve was poor. Still some hesitation about when to move forwards; no regular volleys at all.

Harriet underway. Recovered from 0-2* to 2-2*.

Had a couple of break points so far in a five deuce game.

9 deuces and 5 break points

*3-2

Both girls having to work very hard and doing a lot of running. Good tennis so far.

And saves 2 break points to consolidate.

4-2*

Argh had 3 points for a double break there. A little tentative on a couple of second serve returns let Teichmann control the rallies. Big opportunity.

*4-3

Oh Harriet...

Saves two break points well, gets game point and makes three dodgy errors.

4-4*

In danger of unraveling here.

Yeah she had her chance to put the set to bed but unfortunately couldn't take it and pays the price. Had a point for the tiebreak but made an absolute hash of it and somehow ended up a sitting duck at the net.

5-7 0-0*

Harriet's ranking definitely feels too low to me with the level she's been playing in the last few months. She's knocking at the door but needs to start getting deep in a few 250s, and with a loss dropping her just outside the top 100 (if she can't turn this around), there's a lot of work to be done in the weekly grind.

Potential for a great year though.

Hmm I've just signed up to Discovery+ but I can't see Emma's match listed..is it being shown?

Hope you sussed it eventually. I can see all matches on Discovery  on  desktop and phone,  but had to  put ' Raducanu' in their search box and then all the matches magically appeared, rather than just a select few.   Rather odd but at least the names  of players are identified  unlike Eurosport which seems like a Lucky Dip to me.

Eurosport 2, Gauff on Eurosport 1.

What a dreadful skirt!

It looks better on Emma than on some of the other players though.   I don't like these 'busy' designs on kit though I must say.

If you've signed up to discovery via prime, apparently it's pretty poor. It's best to sign up directly.
