Week 2 - Australian Open Grand Slam - Qualifying Melbourne, Australia Hard

The vast majority of Sonay's points were gained at 25K level events which were mostly in this country. I'm not sure whether her form has "evaporated" or whether she just hasn't managed to progress her game to compete at higher level tournaments. I seem to remember her style was mostly to play long defensive rallies and wait for a mistake which works well against lower level players but not so much once you get to the top 200. In my humble opinion she needs to develop a more attacking style and be willing to come to the net at least occasionally. Otherwise I fear she may just revert to home 25Ks. I hope not as I'm a huge fan

I think she is trying to do this, which may be why more UEs are creeping in as she tries out new approaches.

Like SuperT, I don't think Sonays form has evaporated
She won the 25ks, beating players ranked 300 or whatever
She's had some excellent close matches with players ranked 150 sat. She's just not quite there herself ....

Thanks Christine - that's interesting.  I haven't been able to watch any of her matches this year so I was commenting based on incomplete date

Yes, Sonay has not particularly pushed on further, and that maybe indeed partly because she's been working on things. But purely on results I certainly don't see regression anyway.

She's been playing at a higher level generally and since these home 25K titles in May none of her losses have been to players outside the top 250. In her last 4 tournaments of 2022 post the US Open she had wins over Snigur WR 117 and Kawa WR 199 and her 4 losses were to WRs 87, 116, 155 ( all in tightish 3 sets ) and WR 234 ( retired in the first set )

She came a long way in a short time and resultswise I frankly see nothing to be particularly concerned about over the last 6 months or so. Indeed even less than I had previously imagined after I went back over these results.

 Discovery+ has coverage.

https://www.discoveryplus.com/gb/sport/tennis

has a full listing of matches (including both Heather and Sonay). Mind you, I had trouble finding these matches this morning when I went via my Firestick

Discovery+ isn't as user friendly as Amazon Prime Video, which we'll all miss when it's gone.

Neither of those loses are particularly surprising, but Heather's ranking will take a bit hit after she made round 2 in the main draw a year ago.

Shame, she played so well last week but just had a feeling this one wasn't going to go her way.

Heather's best days are surely behind her now, more disappointed that Sonay's great form from the first half of last year seems to have evaporated.

Heather is still the only WTA player we have capable of providing a real upset. Don't write her off just yet.

Great first set from Lily. Taking the ball early and making Baptiste run.

6-4 0-0*

Katie broke back for *4-5, shanked a forehand on game point and Ponchet and her weird technique takes it. Just looks a half step slow and heavy unfortunately. Can turn it though, still time.

4-6 0-0*

At least Lily had already got one win on the board, 6-4 7-5
