Shaw is playing in the quad doubles so not sure what caused his retirement earlier. I know the quad players can naturally be more susceptible to ailments so maybe he wasnt feeling too well in decided to just focus on the doubles where he can make good progress.
Both quad matches (incl Andy), and also the Alfie and Gordon doubles , are on court at the moment
Play over and Alfie and Gordon win their final doubles to move serenely into the last 4 as group winners.
In the quad doubles, Andy and David Wagner won also to get to 1-1 record. Davidson and Shaw lost easily and are also 1-1 now. Davidson and Shaw however will play the 4th placed team and expect a win, whilst Andy and David play the top ranked team and, frankly, dont expect a win! That said, you never know and they are still in it.
Form to date - Alfie is sitting on a 5-0 record and looking good in singles and doubles.
Gordon has got a 4-1 overall record and doing well, but has Alfie next in singles.
Andy is at a 3-2 win loss record but, being frank, has over performed so far.
Lucy ended with a 0-2 record in doubles only and sadly heads home after a week of struggle ! S
Rain has suspended play, Gordon and Alfie just a few games in with Gordon taking a 3-1 early lead. Maybe Alfie will be happy with that stoppage to get back on track.
It is must win for Gordon, Alfie I think needs to avoid losing by a landslide, and Gordon needs to win by 4 games better than Fernandez in his match to get through. Not sure if that is do able for Gordon, as it will need that landslide to make it happen, Fernandez has the weaker opponent for sure.
But Gordon probably has more motivation than Alfie and Alfie is effectively through to the last 4 so not much to play for
Alfie turned it around and came through 4 and 3 against Gordon. With Fernandez winning the other group match in 3 sets, it means Alfie progresses to the semis in top spot, but Gordon misses out and departs the singles event.
It has been a really good season for Gordon in singles as he re-established himself in the top of the game , and he still has the doubles semis to come tomorrow.
Andy is about to start his quad doubles final group match.
In tomorrows semis, the women start and then Alfie is on second versus de la Puente of Spain. Andy follows Alfie against Vink of Netherlands, the top ranked player. Alfie and Gordon finish it off against Gerrard and Sheffers
Marvellous straight sets win for Alfie in the singles semi, into the weekend final with ease. Well done! Opponent not yet know, Oda and Fernandez into a third set
Marvellous straight sets win for Alfie in the singles semi, into the weekend final with ease. Well done! Opponent not yet know, Oda and Fernandez into a third set
Fernandez won, over the world number one, 7-5 in the third set.
Mens singles final will be 2nd seed Alfie versus 3rd seed, Gustavo Fernandez of Argentina. Fernandez won the Catalonia event last week over Alfie but Alfie won in the group stages this week. So far this season ALfie has a 3-1 H2H over Fernandez, career wise it is 21-17.
Sadly, Andy's run comes to an end in the semis, losing to world number one quad player, Neils Vink. Still, a really good week for Andy and a great end to the season.
And Alfie and Gordon win their semifinal, at a canter, and into the mens doubles final. Opponents not yet known.
So we have Alfie and Alfie/Gordon to go in these Masters finals over the weekend - not exactly sure of schedule, I have a feeling it is doubles Saturday and singles Sunday, but we will see.
Slow start for Alfie and Gordon, a break down at 2-3. The womens doubles final ended in a minor upset with the 2nd seeds beating the top seeds, so hope that was a warning to Alfie and Gordon
