Retires in tears. I feel awful for her but these issues are ultimately a consequence of her failing to close out matches.
She's had countless problems in the past 12 months that have arisen because she's allowed herself to be kept out on court when she should have been in the locker room.
Hopefully this was just a minor roll of the ankle and it will be fine in a couple of days.

Hard to know what to say really. Her short career since winning the US Open seems to be one step forward two steps back.
She played some decent tennis but I agree by not closing out matches she has tired her body out and got injured though I think this was a case more of bad luck.
Hopefully they will get the ankle scanned and checked for any potential ligament damage. If she's just rolled it she should be ok for the Australian Open if it is ligament damage then she could be out for a few weeks.
I thought Emma played reasonably well in the first set but let her level drop at times in the 2nd. Even then, Viktoria was forced to save bps in 3 games, before being broken to love for 5-5. Emma slipped on the first point of the next game; her movement looked strange after that. MTO at the end of the set. Retired after the 1st point of the 3rd.
I was watching most of the stream, and i'm not sure we actually saw the slip that led to her injury? It certainly didn't come up on a replay but was referred to by the commentator at the time. I think she actually went down and tried to get up to hit the ball. Did anyone actually see it. Also, I did wonder if players need to wear different shoes for different surfaces and could precautions have been taken for playing on perhaps a smoother surface than the stadium one. ?

Players definitely wear different shows for different surfaces. There's ones for grass and clay, of course, but also ones for different sort of hard surfaces too, depending how grippy or slippery the surface is etc.
I watched some of the match, here and there, and thought she was playing pretty well overall.
As others say, shame not to keep the intensity at the start of the second, but it's pretty common

Terrible news, she just can't get a run going without injury

It was in the first point of the game at *5-5 when she turned to get back to the centre after playing a wide forehand. It is at 1hour 21 mins 30 seconds on the prime stream.

Are she and her team perhaps a little responsible then for not taking precautions for the surface, which elsewhere has been reported that Emma claims "'was slippy".
