RE: US College Signings 2023/24

ITF M25 Sunderland Mens Doubles

Huge congratulations to 2023 Memphis graduate David on his dubs win with Marcus. great start to his pro career for another of our former college players smile

Once a hot destination for Brits, Joe Salisbury is Memphis most famous tennis alumni. David is probably another of those whose main focus was A levels at school, rarely played ITFs and probably had a lower UTR than his ability when applying for college (went Jan 2018 and redshirted). Played in the Herts county team with Charlie Broom (Dartmouth/Baylor) and Finn Bass (Baylor) who are also currently giving the Pro tour a go.

Final: David Stevenson & Marcus Willis CR 1550 (1359+191) defeated (4) James Davis & Joshua Goodger CR 1507 (623+884) by 6-4 7-6(3)

Selections for The National Fall Championships are largely based on performance in the Regionals. There are 2 players from each region who get in. That may sound logical but in fact there are some very strong regions where there should be more representation and some very weak ones where 2 spots is too many. In fact a lot of the top ranked players do not even play in the regionals. As a result there are only 5 top 20 men players and 5 top 20 women in the draw.

Compare this with the All American tournament where the majority of the top ranked players compete. As an example neither Millie Rajecki nor Angelica Blake played the event but both played All Americans.

Its still a competitive event with some very good players but probably it should be called Super Regionals rather than National Championships.

when you say the All American championship, do you mean the NCAA championships played earlier in the year? Or is the All American something different ?!

Jack won his semi and plays Micah Braswell in the final.

The All American Championships are at the beginning of October. I posted about it at the time. It's a qualifying event for the Fall Nationals with (not quite sure but I think) the 4 semi-finalists earning a place.

Ok, cool, thanks Lambda. The NCAA in May , I think, is bigger again. I know weve been through this before, just trying to establish the hierarchy in my mind! Paul Jubb, of course famously won the NCAA and didnt Arthur Fery do well also.

And sorry - DannyThomas above is suggesting the All Americans has a stronger field and yet from your post the All Americans is a qualifier for these Fall Nationals? Which seems paradoxical!

It was the ITA All American Championships last week.

In a 64 draw, Jack Pinnington won a couple of rounds before unfortunately giving a walkover in R16. Oliver Tarvet having got through qualifying, won one match and lost in the R32.

In the women's, a 32 draw, disappointing losses for Millie Rajecki and Angelica Blake in R16.

There was lots of other British representation in qualifying, pre-qualifying and doubles but I'm not going through them.

Found your Post on the All Americans, thanks.

I know. The selection criteria for the National Fall Championships is : 24 players from the 12 regionals ( including 2 from each of the weaker regions ) , 4 All American semi finalists, 2 winners from a couple of college events and 2 wild cards. No players are selected based on their national rankings. Even the wild cards are awarded based on performance in the Regionals. It is only a 32 draw with no qualifying or pre qualifying. So the majority of the top ranked players dont play.

On the other hand the All Americans has a 96 draw prequalifying, 64 qualifying and 32 main.Selections for the main draw are 12 top ranked regional players, 8 qualifiers , 8 based on National rankings and 4 wild cards based primarily on national rankings. So pretty much all of the top ranked players get into main or qualifying. It is a much tougher tournament to win.

Absolutely thrilled for Eva - and SO hope her injuries are behind her

As a reminder, Eva was our joint national champion in 2021 - she won the U18s and U16s national championships. An amazing performance.

All but two of his victrices were sweeps.

#8 Oliver Tarvet (San Diego) is off to a roaring start to his sophomore year, going 11-2 in singles and 4-1 in doubles so far this season. Five of those wins have come against ranked opponents.
