Sorry to hear that, Jon

How are you feeling this morning?

It took me about 5 days to get over it....but really not nice

Similar time, with 1 day feeling really rotten. Weirdly I was hypersensitive to smells for a few days before testing positive and my favourite wine tasted of chemicals hmm Pretty sure I caught it on a plane.

Wondering how the college students are faring?  With international students returning plus  travelling for tournaments etc, Fall semester likely time for a Covid peak..

Thanks for all the recent updates Strongbow and Lambda

The only name I recognise from the womens 2015-2016 is Elise van H as my son knows her. Elise had a great college career and concluded her Hawkeye career in the spring of 2021 as one of the most decorated womens tennis student-athletes in Iowa and Big Ten history. Wondering why she didnt try and go pro, my son says she was a decent player.

You need specsavers, EP

Maddie Brooks is on the list and she's playing at Shrewsbury this week

But, yes, I'm with you for Elise - I saw her a couple of times at Surbiton and really liked her game

Mia Smith rings a bell too. As does Brodie Walker.....

But I might be getting confused...

Elise is now listed as Elise van Heuvelen Treadwell - sugguesting she has married. Might be a reason for not going pro.

It's a combination of her parent's names.

The fall season culminates with the ITA National Fall Championships this week.

In the men's singles #26 ranked Jack Pinnington (TCU) has reached the QF after defeating #10 ranked Alexander Bernard (ATP722) in the Round of 16. Jack was awarded a WC after unfortunate circumstances affected his chances in 2 qualifying events for a direct place. He had to withdraw from the ITA All-American Championships with illness having reached the R16 and lost in the QF of the Texas Regionals after being compromised with a sprained ankle when serving for the match when leading 6-2 5-2.

In the doubles Lui Maxted (TCU) and new partner Duncan Chan playing their 3rd tournament together have also reached the QF. In the opening round of 32 they knocked out the top seeds and #6 ranked team of Heck and Ozolins in an epic battle 7-6(6) 6-7(9) [10-8]. They received a direct place here after finishing runners-up in the Texas Regionals, losing to another doubles team from TCU.

In the women's doubles Grace Piper (South California) and partner Parker Fry have also reached the QF. They face a tough match against the #4 seeds of Guzman and Shcherbinina. The Oklahoma pair came into this event unbeaten in 15 matches having won the ITA All-American Championships and Central Regional Champions. I believe Grace and Parker received a WC to these championships. They had reached the SF of the SouthWest regionals and Grace had also reached the SF of the singles in the SouthWest Regionals.

Jack Pinnington Jones defeated Pablo Masjuan 6-4 6-3. In the SF he is up against the only remaining unseeded player Jack Anthrop (Ohio State). He mentioned that the illness that forced him out of the All-Americans was covid (but he doesn't even know how he got tested) and that he is not fully recovered from rolling his ankle in the Regionals. He says he his more mentally fatigued after no ad game matches because of the extra concentration needed on deuce points and that he hated deuce points last season. But he has worked with his coaches, has a plan on how to play deuce points and is mentally stronger this season.

But doubles participation is at an end as Lui lost his match 4 & 1. Similarly, Grace & partner put up a good fight against the All American champions but lost 2 & 2.

To follow Jack's SF which is scheduled for 6pm UK time
Live scores are here
There's a choice of streaming options
Dedicated court stream without commentary or score at track tennis
Or the multi court coverage with commentary and interviews from Cracked Racquets

Looking at the other 3 semis players, Anthrop, Micah Braswell, JJ Tracy, Id say Jack PJ has the best record behind him in pros and juniors. Could stand a chance here. Keep us informed, Lambda!

Selections for The National Fall Championships are largely based on performance in the Regionals. There are 2 players from each region who get in. That may sound logical but in fact there are some very strong regions where there should be more representation and some very weak ones where 2 spots is too many. In fact a lot of the top ranked players do not even play in the regionals. As a result there are only 5 top 20 men players and 5 top 20 women in the draw.

Compare this with the All American tournament where the majority of the top ranked players compete. As an example neither Millie Rajecki nor Angelica Blake played the event but both played All Americans.

Its still a competitive event with some very good players but probably it should be called Super Regionals rather than National Championships.
