It should be a great quarter final contest Millie against Vidmanova of Georgia who is also in red hot form. Her win over 6 seed Connie Ma of Stanford today was impressive . But Millie is in great form too..
Millie seals the 1st set as she started it - with an ace. She is up for this and is playing well and is the better player. But Vidmanova is getting more into the match and I feel that Millie will have to win this in 2.
Millie's semi-final opponent has finally been decided. The match to decide Millie's opponent was a 3 setter lasting 3hrs 20m. Millie plays another player with Georgia, Lopata, who knocked out Sofia Johnson yesterday. Although ranked 70 and usually playing at the 4 position, Lopata has a couple of seeded scalps this week, defeating 5 seed Fiona Crawley in R32 in 3 sets (in another match over 3 hours) and the 9-16 seed Celia-Belle Mohr today.
Women's SF (1) Stoiana (Texas A&M) v (8) Noel (Miami) (2) Rajecki (NC State) v Lopata (Georgia)
Her opponent has a very awkward game style with lots of slice and junk balls which didnt give her any rhythm. The latter stages were very nervy on both sides with more errors than winners. Millie did a great job pulling back from 3-5 to 5-5 but then unfortunately made 4 doubles in the next game and in the last one Lopata scrambled across the line.
Disappointing but Millie has had a great year with her #2 ranking, semi finals for the second consecutive year and passing 100 NC State career wins. She should be very proud.
In the other semi final Noel somewhat surprisingly easily wins 6-3 6-2 over no 1 seed Stoiana.
We do have 1 winner tonight. Congratulations to Freya Davies who's singles win contributed to her Nova Southeastern team winning their first ever NCAA Div II women's team championship.
Freya and partner won their doubles set, but the team lost the other two doubles to lose the doubles point. Freya raced to a 0 & 1 win in singles on court 3 and watched as her team mates secured a further 3 wins to win 4-2.
Freya (Graduate Student) and her doubles partner are the #2 ranked doubles pair in D2 schools. They were the #1 ranked doubles pair by a country mile all season until unfathomably another team gained a shed load of points at the end of April to leapfrog them going from #3 to #1.
For those who don't do twitter, this is what he said.
"After reflecting a lot these last couple of days, I could not be more proud of what I have been able to accomplish during my time at Tennessee."
"Before coming to college my mum, my high school coach and I didnt even think going to an American university for tennis was even a possibility."
"I am now walking away with my head held high, partially because of all the special things I have been able to achieve during my time at Tennessee."
"However, the main reason as to why I will be leaving with my head held high is because of how much I have grown as a person and how I left it all out there on the court every single day."
"I am walking away with a group of friends and family that I will have for the rest of my life. They all made my four years here incredibly special and it was not always easy, but it was certainly worth it."
"I am so grateful to Tennessee for putting a huge amount of faith in a 17 year old nobody and I just hope it paid off for them, I know it certainly did for me."
"There are so many people who made my journey up until now a reality from present coaches, past coaches, support staff, friends and teammates."
"The three people I want to thank the most is my mum, my grandma and my grandad because without them, non of this would be possible."
"Tennessee will always be home to me and I am so excited for what the future holds. Nobody knows what their future has in store for them, but the one thing that I do know is that I will be working relentlessly to get to where I want to get to."
