WTA Finals 2022

Most low key tour finals I recall. Little publicity and venue in Fort Worth. The crowds are

literally zero, no one there. Poor show by the WTA.

mind, lack of women star names in top 8 doesnt help.

Gauff is there and also Pegula is at least American - though nothing out before the SFs.

But yes that bit 'extra' from the leading ranked players is helpful for building the WTA in general. Clearly nothing to do with Ash Barty now but some folk took exception to some of us in the past suggesting it was a pity for growing the WTA that Ash didn't project more beyond 'just' getting the job done on court when, with me at least, it wasn't a criticism of Ash ( to a very large extent she can can only be how she is ) but a genuine thought.

The 250 points for a group win but also 125 points for a group loss has sure helped build up an end of season ( and into next season) points gap between the 8 WTA finals players and the rest.

Perhaps the YEC shouldn't actually be a ranking event itself given the big advantage it gives in the following season to those to qualify.

Arguably, though my main issue is probably those losing points. Pegula and Gauff get 375 points for losing 3 matches. No doubt reaching the tour finals is very lucrative in $s. May that be enough reward without adding such ranking points without actually winning a match.

At least the ATP give 200 points for winning a finals group match and zero for losing.

Just to record that Caroline Garcia beat Aryna Sabalenka 7-6(4) 6-4 in the final to rise back up to her 2018 CH 4. The losing semi finalists were Sakkari and Swiatek.

The end of season top 10 are :

1. Swiatek (at CH) 11085 points
2 Jabeur (at CH) 5055
3. Pegula (at CH) 4691
4. Garcia (at CH) 4375
5. Sabalenka (CH = 2) 3925
6. Sakkari (CH = 3) 3871
7. Gauff (CH = 4) 3646
8. Kasatkina (at CH( 3435
9. Kudermetova (at CH) 2795

One 2 players in the top 10 have won a Grand Slam and one of those is  the suspended Simona Halep. Jabeur has been in 2 finals and Gauff one which leaves 6 yet to make a final. If Wimbledon points had been awarded then Rybakina would have been in the top 10.

Just 4 months since her strong showing at Wimbledon, Garcia wins the WTA Finals. Other players in her section at Wimbledon did quite well too during that time.
