Week 44 - ITF W100 Shrewsbury, Great Britain Hard

I see Talia withdrew last week.

Maybe slightly injured?

Hope she's OK....

Puts the women's top 500 play back one peg though....

A question: Do qualifiers get the 1 point for making the round of 32 as well as the 6 for qualifying? If not why not as MD points are normally additional to points from qualies.

No, they don't get the one point. It's in the rulebook, but no reason given.

I can't recall WTA ranking points, whether for ITF, WTA tour or Slam events, ever adding R1 losing points to qualifying points.

Clearly not getting the additional R1 losing point(sl doesn't really make much difference at all. Just a bit confusing since ATP points do add R1 losing points to Q points ( albeit they for some time now have only given R1 losing points in Slams and Masters ).

Talia played on through an injury which she received last week at Loughborough.

I thought that was only for W25's - could easily be wrong disbelief

W25s don't nowadays give anyone a MD point for losing in MD R1, direct entry, WC or qualifier.

Above that, for W25+H, W60 etc, direct entrants and WCs get 1 point for losing in MD R1, qualifiers just get their qualifying points.

So as TA says our qualifiers here would not get an additional point if they lose in R1. Not that 'just' their 6 qualifying points rather than a total of 7 points is greatly here nor there. I just wish the ATP and WTA didn't so often diverge in their ranking practices.

Makes sense as the qualifying points would be greater or equal tto 1. Many thanks for clearing this up thumbsup.gif

I did do a double-check by looking for a qualifier in an earlier W100 that lost in R1 just to make sure !

First round draw looks like it was generally kind on British women, fingers crossed

Emily App lost the first set 2-6

She played absolutely fine, a good level, just like last week, (right up until the last game where two double-faults are a major problem - in fact, serving a tad less well overall but mainly because of pressure being put on her)

But Lys was just too good - Emily's 'winning' serves came back, as did her best attacks, and Lys then took control

Sonay, on the other hand, is playing someonw a fair bit lower than Lys in the rankings, and it shows. Sonay is pusning her around, making her make mistakes - and (miracles!!!!) coming into the net a fair bit and putting some volley away

Just taking a breather ? Came back pretty strong.

(Can't watch any streams today, just looking in at the scoreboard occasionally)
