Eala looks a real talent and I don't see Maia getting much from that match. We will do well if we get one through, with Eliz, Freya and Ella having outside chances.
Mr Doom and Gloom again
But one time it has to be right; however, like today, let's hope it's not tomorrow either.
The Thai girl has been struggling recently so Ella has every chance
Emily App beat the Latvian player quite easily in the end, she barely squeezed past Katy Dunne at Roehampton and has not done very well in between either.
So that bodes well for Eliz who's on form at the moment
Obviously, once again, on ranking it should be none so one would be a success. But not as strange as all that, even if more.
Yes, individually each of our players is the ranking and to various degrees the betting underdog
But collectively I think it is a perfectly reasonable expectation to be looking for at least one win. Indeed you can get decent odds against on an accumulator that all our 5 girls lose if any pessimistic soul wants to go for it. For me, 0 wins would really be pretty disappointing and I would need 2 wins to call it a success.
And I do think we will indeed get one or two wins, most likely from Ella and Eliz.
It was pretty tight at the end - each mathc point/important point, she played just a little more conservatively and paid the price - and even on the end, took three smashes to put it away
Which serve? Try as I might I can't figure out if this means "Freya's opponent had difficulties with Freya's serve" or "Freya's opponent had difficulties with her own serve"
Ella wins a close first set in a tie break. With many of our top juniors competing this week and last week, it's made me wonder where Eva Shaw is. I assume she's been injured, but maybe someone here has some info.
Isabelle goes out 4-6 0-6. She started really well and was 4-2 up at one point but Wickmayer blew her away in the second set. Still think she needs to work on her net game but liked the fact she didn't try and play it too safe, even after she lost the first set she continued to go for her shots.
As expected, the Thai girl didn't look all that happy, you can tell when players looks like 'here we go again, another loss on the horizon.....'
And what was interesting was that Ella played quite differently from yesterday - put more height on the ball, less flat attack shots, BUT a lot of coming into the net - both normal, good approach shots, and sometimes even 'contre-temps' (whatever that is in English - when the other player's not looking, and you wait till the last minute). And what I've always liked with her net play is that she goes for the 'easy' volley - i.e. the right one. Punched into open court, or sliced long to get a floaty next ball - none of these overthought, over-complicated ones, requiring perfect touch and timing, just playing the percentage volley confidently in front of herself.
