Week 44 - ITF W100 Shrewsbury, Great Britain Hard

Konjuh is really serving well, Katie hanging in though.

Competitive match between Katie and Ana. The break at *4-5 to lose the set was a bit disappointing in its predictability, but Katie just did really well to save 2 match points at the same stage in the second.

4-6 5-5*

Ach, two really poor forehands from *5-4 in the breaker after doing so well to get the minibreaks.

Out 6-4 7-6(5)

Good tennis for the most part.

Good quality match. Konjuh just had a bit too much firepower..

A good effort from Eliz in that first set. Not a big surprise it ran away in the second but she nearly dug herself out a big hole and should be pleased with her week.

5-7 4-6

Eliz was beaten by 7-5 6-4. Another good effort and she fought back in both sets.

I do though see what's missing today. Bit late maybe but I have to say - we have no chance of getting anyone through from these ties!

I don't think it was that - I think it was because De Minaur had hot-tailed it over from Paris and Katie was all a bit self-conscious biggrinno

Quite a turn aound by Myazaki - she lost the first 0-6, but has won the second 6-1.

Edit - set 3 not going so well.....

Saw a little of Eliz, not seen her play for a while.
Lacks power, but pushes the ball back and moves her opponent round the court.

Very odd swings in momentum in Yuriko's match, which ended:

Eva Lys GER d. WC Yuriko Lily Miyazaki GBR 6-0 1-6 6-0

The Miyazaki scoreline is peak WTA. Congratulations to both Eva and Lily.

First two matches were a clear step above the second two in terms of quality. First time Id seen Maloney play live, her current ranking looks about right in terms of her weaponry but based on a sample size of one she seems to possess the ability to make her opponent play well below their level.

Not sure if it came over on stream, but whoever selected the ball kids was maybe a bit optimistic. Dont think its the ball kids fault themselves but many of them were so young they didnt have the power to move/clear balls efficiently and seemed confused about many of the fundamentals of moving balls asap to the servers end. For Lilys match they reverted to more typically aged ball kids and it was a revelation.

PS great facility at Shrewsbury. Ive seen worse set ups for ATP 250s.

It must be a trend, the ball kids in the early rounds in W60 Trnava were similar to what you describe, in fact I remember thinking that there were three opponents playing in a few of the matches, the two players, and the ball kids. It was funny to watch, however the kids did brilliantly, as always.

At least Lily finished the match. When Madison Brengle beat Dayana  Yastremska in the 1st round of the Australian Open this  year there was a similar scoreline. Brengle was leading 6-1, 0-6, 5-0 when Yastremska retired.

Yastremska has never been that sporting a player
