that was good considering she was looking for board members to be her friends and to meet her at the airbnb in France earlier in the week. Pulled herself around really well
Well done Katie. A good win. Wickmayer will be getting frustrated it's taking her her a while to get her ranking back up but she can still hit a very good ball.
That's an impressive win! Brilliant Eliz. How does she play?
Very poor forehand, excellent backhand. Served really well today and kept composed and in the moment.
I have been watching and supporting Eliz for about 18 months. Whilst I would have consider Wolf's assessment correct there has been a real change in the last month or so. She has been doing a lot of work with Jo Durie and Alan Jones on her forehand and service. Both have come on by leaps and bounds. I'm delighted to see these great results at Loughborough and Shrewsbury.

I don't particulalry agree about the forehand/backhand analysis
For me, Eliz plays a game that counters the ball, rather than takes it on
She has a very good centre of balance, it's low, so she's stable and can absorb pace and re-direct well.
The French would say she 'distributes' the ball well.
She also uses the short angles well and does a lot of damage with them
Her serve is weak, although it has got better (it used to be awful)
She also has a very good mentality
All in all, it makes her difficult to beat - the ball comes back, making good percentage choices - it's not my favourite game but I've watched several of her matches recently and I admire her approach

That's a very good summary of Eliz's game CD. It was an entertaining match to watch, and by the end Eliz had worn down her opponent, by just returning everything. The thing that struck me was just how nimble and rapid she is around the court, whether along the baseline or getting to the short ball. It's like her game is based on her movement, because when she's on the run and pushed wide, she then has the angle to pass her opponent. Many of Eliz's returns come back with hardly any pace on them so the opponent is having to generate the pace, and put the ball close to the lines. Eliz doesn't have a lot of power when she's forcing the rally, but she does vary the pace on the ball very well. The two players were quite evenly matched, but Doi just didn't have enough pace of shot to get through Maloney's defence.
Very good to end the day with 3 wins. A well deserved overall GB return after some of the earlier close defeats. It's been a very encouraging tournament.

Yep, after all the naysaying. there has been some real progress. A few women will hopefully come away with a lift in their confidence.

Yes I hope they take it as encouragement not disappointment. Particularly for Freya, who pushed a top 50 player to the end. That's a great achievement and I hope it spurs her on.

Yes. I'd gone for a crazy four wins, and - as someone said - it could have been six - how crazy is that????
Lily obviously got slightly lucky.
But Sonay was within a hair's breadth of winning - and I think she'd win next time - she's only 21 and rather new to this level of tennis - she lacks a bit of match technique and experience. But her tennis is there.
Jodie was also right up there, as expected.
Freya was obviously the big surprise - just brilliant that she was playing so well (but hers is the loss that might have the biggest effect - by which I mean that if she'd won I think it would have made way more difference than if Sonay or Jodie had won). However, as people say, maybe it will be the boost she needs - with her back problems and then all the horrid illness problems with her boyfriend she's sort of 'lost' a whole lot of years that could have been so much more productive. But there's still time.....she's not even 25 yet
