United Cup

I know the purists don't approve of on-court coaching but I thought it added quite a bit to the competition, not sure we would have got as far as we did without Tim Henman's constant encouragement.

Good run though by team GB. Picked up some good wins. Enjoyable event.

Yes, overall a good event, offering very good matches for players prior to the Aus Open.Yes, I don't like the 6 groups of 3 etc format but ultimately the tennis has won out.

Well done to GB, in particular Cam and Katie.

Just updating Indy's post above

USA lead GB 2-1
Greece and Croatia are 1 each
Italy lead Poland 2-1

USA ( 11-2, 23-7 ) vs GB ( 8-5 ,18-15 )
Greece ( 9-3, 19-10 ) vs Croatia ( 9-3, 19-9)
Poland ( 8-5, 17-12 ) vs Italy ( 10-3, 21-8)

If my maths is correct, GB cant possibly do better than the loser of Greece and Croatia. Nor Italy. So Poland is our only hope unless we win both remaining matches. For that to happen, we probably need Poland to lose both remaining ties against Italy; Linette is playing Bronzetti next up in that - go Bronzetti.

But our most likely chance to progress is to beat the States - Evo is now 1 set all against Tiafoe so in a battle

So Croatia and Italy both 10-5? Who goes through please?

1. Italy 10-5, sets 21-12 (64%)
2. Croatia 10-5, sets 21-13 (62%)
3. GB 8-7, sets 19-19 (50%)

 by one set then!

Presumably Italy cant play Poland again in the semis? So it will be Italy or Poland v USA and Italy or Poland v Greece?

Is that drawn or decided by some other mathematical formula ?

And presumably as players now need to change venues for the finals , there will be a rest day or two?

The SFs and final are in Sydney ( SFs on Friday & Saturday, final on Sunday )

It's Poland vs USA and Greece vs Italy. I don't know how that was determined.

The semi final ties are structured so that, if it went to seeding, the #1 seeded country would play the best RU.

In other words the winner of the city final featuring the winner of group A would play the best RU. If that had resulted in a city final rematch the ties would have been switched so the highest seeded country in the other tie played the best RU.

So , yes, that Works with Greece winning group A and playing Italy as best runner up in the semis

Pegula continued her fine form and beat Swiatek 2 & 2. Tiafoe also won giving the USA a 2-0 over Poland.

And surprisingly Italy took a 1-0 lead over Greece as Trevisan beats Sakkari.

Musetti will almost certainly beat his 800 ranked Greek opponent and put Italy 2-0 up.

USA won 5-0 against Poland.

Looks like Italy will get through to play them.

Yes, 3-1 now to Italy. At least Tsitsipas won his singles to avoid both SFs being won after just 1 match on day 2,. Playing two ties over two days at the group and SF stages, rather than complete ties on one day, has been another strange feature of the format.

USA win the final 3-0 although with ranking points still at stake , the final womens singles is about to be played.

USA eventually won 4-0, with the mixed doubles unplayed.

They were 22-2 for the tournament, the clear class of the field, wirh one of these losses being Fritz's loss to Cam
.
