Yes I'm a big fan of Eden's game but she is a self-saboteur unfortunately. If she can get her mindset sorted and add 10% to her first serve, she'll be a real force.
We used to say this about Jodie, and she's improved a lot it appears. I think it's a kind of perfectionism which we are all vulnerable to in our work - you mess up, but you want everyone around you to know that 'usually I'm better than this', so you overtly criticise yourself, to project the idea 'this isn't the real me'. Unfortunately, of course, the mistakes are part of the real you, and if you allow them to appear significant it becomes a vicious cycle.
It's like a teacher planning out a lesson in their head, and then being frustrated that, when it comes into contact with real children, it doesn't play out the same. Being frustrated by this is natural, but illogical - practice is fundamentally different to the real world. I really hope Eden can work on this, because she has such potential.
It's a good analysis.
I don't really go for the perfectionist argument - or, at least, I think you're right but I hate the way that lots of people (not just tennis players) use it as an excuse, and - worse - a laudable excuse. They're almost proud of it.
I say, if you're a perfectionist, then be perfect.
Absolutely. It's something loads of us do - I know I do - it's just unlucky if you're a sportsperson because people can see it happening.
Impressive few weeks from Emily, who seemed to have completely regressed for years in singles - to now having two of her biggest ever singles weeks. Tennis can be so interesting!
Agreed with all the above, Eden has a beautiful game - the groundstrokes are hit so elegantly and her serve when on looks good. But she gets down on herself so much, and also buckles when pressure is applied. Shame - as I thought she'd turned a corner at the beginning of the year.
Emily App was always talented and just don't understand why it has taken until the last few weeks to click.
Top 500 player if she can maintain these levels.
Eden has a nice game, but IMHO she is very one dimensional

Yes, she was always talented in a general way, the same as many others.
If you look back at previous posts from everybody, there was a lot of support for her, of course, but no one who really rated her above any of the others. I saw one of my old ones which said she was one of the few kids who seemed to actually enjoy playing tennis, and I think that still have some relevance. And she loved going to the net. But she lost to Ali Collins, lost to Ceire Mullins, I remember, she wasn't a player that anyone had on their pick list as one of the top hopes.
Nearly everyone (me included) thought she made a serious error not taking up her US scholarship (unlike Jodie at the same time, who had a far higher potential in her tennis). (And Emily got 10 A*s, I remember, she's a bright girl).
Emily's junior ranking was very much because she played a zillion of events, often in South America (her dad's a wealthy man)
And her Sky Scholarship thingy was always a big issue - not sure it did her any favours.
But yes, it's curious why it's suddenly clicked. Can't help wondering if maybe breaking the tie with Ali Collins has helped her for some reason? I don't mean that nastily to Ali but, as said, I've watched quite a few of Emily's matches this summer, expecially after the Surbiton one which was SUCH good tennis, but SUCH a 'snatching defeat from the jaws of victory' sort of match... And she's basically been playing a lot better since June when she and Ali stopped doubles together.
Saying she's a top-500 hope obviously isn't really saying anything, as she was 501 before, and is only 23, so that's a given.
Anyway, it's very pleasant to see. Eliz makes herself very hard to beat, though, you have to admire it in her, it'll be interesting.

You mention Mike Appleton is a very wealthy man- Im intrigued what he made his wealth from, genuinely? I used to watch him at Ilkley most years around the late 70s and 80s, he played most years and won it at least once, beating players like Donald Watt, John Paish, Nick Brown, Simon Ickringill, and I had him as my favourite of that level of player back then. He obviously went on to a business career, and idea what it was?
I'm pretty sure he went into finance, in some manner. But apologies to him if I got that wrong.
I should add that, although she turned down her US scholarship, Emily did go and study for a degree - she is a student at Edinburgh Napier Uni, doing Business and Enterprise Sport (which is a strange title but whatever)
But it's a distance/online degree, designed for professional athletes, so it fits round their sport schedules.
Anyway, I was pleased for her when I read it a while back - indeed, it might be one of the reasons she's turned things around - I think she only started in Jan this year.

I see they have confirmed that recently. Malygina turned her ankle in the doubles yesterday, but limped on to the end of the match. She may scratch from the doubles final as well.
